I'm trying to find a good use case for records, but the best I can come up with is using it for composite hashmap keys. I suppose when combined with sealed classes and pattern matching features at some point it might be more useful, bu

Concurrency issues are a challenge, but a bigger problem is when designing a copy-on-write B-Tree, which is what I did. With such a design, any change to a node causes a replacement to be allocated, and then the pointer into it must be chan

The default limit is usually 25% of total physical memory. Should the default limit be the maximum? I think it's fine to have the default limit where it's at, to force me to think about what the actual requirements are. When you m

After watching this video, how many of us wrote a program to see if we could just randomly find a case which didn't converge? I wrote one, but of course, the program didn't prove the 3x+1 problem wrong.

What did you get nerve damage from? I assume it wasn't from the vaccines, but someone might infer this and point out a reason why we should avoid them.

The next blog post goes into more detail regarding possible optimizations. https://renato.athaydes.com/posts/how-to-write-slow-rust-cod... The JVM startup time is discussed, and it mentions that a pre-compiled version

I don't think the Scanimate was used for this. This video shows a digital computer being used to create the animated trench sequence: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMeSw00n3Ac

Not quite. The original green threads were seen as more of a hack until Solaris supported true threads. Green threads could only support one CPU core, and so without a major redesign, it was a dead end.

Even more amazing is that OS-9 was available for the "toy" Color Computer 15 years before multitasking became available for Windows or MacOS. The only thing preventing the CoCo from supporting safe multi-user interaction is an MMU

The inclusion of Java in the title is misleading: "For those coming from the Java world: there's no garbage collector in Ada, so objects allocated by the new operator need to be expressly freed." So really, you first need a

I'd like to understand what you mean by this. I'm no expert on Rust lock-free designs, but what are the "amortization guarantees" that you refer to? Is there something that I can read that explains this in greater detail

And even more misunderstood is the cost of exchanging state between CPU cores. A lockless algorithm can be just as slow (or even slower sometimes) than a lock based design simply because of contention at the hardware level.

Having direct control over this type of thing is important when updating the fields of a persistent data structure. I've had to deal with mistake before, where the original developer thought the layout matched what they specified, but

I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. When the iMac came out, my opinion was the same as yours -- absolutely beautiful design. Unfortunately, everyone copied the look (often quite badly), and now the original iMac looks tacky and d

The mRNA vaccines aren't currently being produced at a high enough volume. Having more types of vaccines available means more vaccinations are possible in a shorter period of time.

The LMDB test is a bit contrived. By choosing a key of 16 bytes and a value of 4000 bytes, it's nearly optimal. The underlying block device wants 4KiB aligned writes for best performance, and that's pretty much what this test is d
