I'm pretty sure I heard them say this. They can see certain stats and high level overview. But they have no idea what it's thinking. They know the general pattern of the algorithm. They even explain it. But the algorithm involves

I mean it's not clear in anyway "where" is the intuition, it just sort of magically emerges from the connections and the weights in a way that no one can really grasp. If nothing else, just due to the sheer number of neurones

I would want to see a longer game where a team of professionals play against AlphaGo, just to test its limits.

Just let it play against itself. certainly one side will lose. Though I wonder if something emerges. For example, black always wins, or, black always wins from a certain opening position.

Actually computers were already in the top 10 percentile or so. I mean top go playing bots ranked something like 5dan amateur which is very hard to achieve, so it could already defeat most human players.

Actually this AI kind of confirms these myths, since its basis are not in mathematics but in neural networks. While it could be argued to be just math, so is the brain, but that's besides the point. The point is, even the programmers h

There's something comical about that list of candidates. Why haven't heard of these guys before? Does this happen every year?

I think command line tools (like say, git-config) manage one option at a time. GUI tools tend to manage everything at once. Imagine the giant options box from MS Word 2003.

My guess is that GUI tools often clobber configuration files once they touch them, because it's easier to write code that stores configuration as a hashmap and when it saves it back, the output is not going to preserve things like, use

Yea I never understood why there's no separation between these two. The fact that apt-get needs root password only makes sense if apt-get is meant for system packages. User applications should not require root privileges to install.

I would rather not discuss my view of gun laws in the US. The thought experiment was meant to counter the arguments in the parent comment about whether drunk-driving is a crime or merely a "pre-crime".

This argument could be made against wikis and issues and static websites (and file uploads). I think a discussion forum is integral to any open source project. People traditionally use mailing lists, which have an awful UX in my opinion. A

Why doesn't github have a proper discussion forum per project? I don't consider the "issues" a proper discussion forum. That seems to me like it would be much more valuable, specially for community projects.

It's more like the "edit file" feature where you can edit in-place on the github web interface directly. It makes github a more complete "gui" for git. To be honest I don't feel that this is the right approach.
