Since we're close to the topic, let's take a moment to all remember that Flash Boys is a crappy book that gets a lot of stuff really really wrong. Read the rebuttal! https://www.amazon.com/Flash-Boys-Insiders-Persp

Er, I screwed that up. China emits 11 gigatonnes. The US emits ~half that. So more like 800 billion or 4% of GDP. About what we spend on Medicare. Of course, even if US emissions went to zero, it wouldn't be enough to stop global warmi

Just adding on to this, some math: The US emits about 11 gigatonnes of CO2 per year. At $150/ton, sequestering it all would cost 1.65 trillion dollars or about 8.25% of GDP. That's about what we spend on social security and the mi

In case you haven't seen it, this read on the SPLC was eye opening: https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/the-reckoning-of-mo... From a recent issue of The New Yorker.

If a student with an ISA doesn't get a good job after graduation, the school gets nothing (or not much). If the student does get a good job, the school gets paid more. Thus the school is highly incentivized to make sure that their grad

OP wasn't talking about funding the school via federal student loans, but instead via taxes which is why the inequality in my comment said "tax funded" and not "loan funded."

If the point you are trying to make is: 1) loans should be dischargeable via bankruptcy so that 2) lenders refuse to make such large loans so that 3) tuitions are forced down Then I think that's a perfectly fine point of vie

ISAs != tax funded education because the former closely aligns the incentives of the educator with the educated while the latter does not.

Student loans were much much smaller in the era you refer to (before 1976 when the law was changed). Behavior would be much different today with the much larger debts people take on.

If college loans could be discharged via bankruptcy it wouldn't just be liberal arts majors with 100k loans who did it, EVERYONE would. Even people graduating and taking high paying jobs who could easily pay back the loans. Saying that

Indentured servitude requires someone to work for a particular employer for a fixed period of time. ISAs do not do this. Words have meanings. You don't get to just ignore them to make an emotional point.

Your proposal is unworkable because virtually everyone graduates from college with close to zero assets. No matter what someone's ability to repay their loans were, they would have a huge incentive to declare bankruptcy on the day they

The programs coached by all of the coaches on those lists make more money than they cost. That's not true for all athletic departments. But it is for the big name one where coaches get paid millions.

I definitely agree with you about zoning needing to be done at the state level. I'm somewhat optimistic that some of the state level zoning initiatives in CA will take hold and we'll see some progress in this area. Fingers crossed

I agree with your EV vs WV comparison. I just like the highlight the WV because it's such a rich person enclave with a community board that way way overdesignates buildings as "historic" as a way to stifle development.

You don't have to mandate construction of housing. You just have to get rid of the INSANE barriers to housing construction that exist today in places like SF and the wider Bay Area.
