I do buy programming books! I even sometimes read them without touching a computer. Studies show that books is the best media to learn. Forget video, books + practice (now with AI explanations) is my learning methodology.

Maybe I could cope with the inconvenience of queuing 45 min to get a car from a leading rental brand that, although they see me regularly, always need to re-enter my documents in their system (go figure...). But the main reason is that thos

I have a plug-in hybrid and, although it was not my initial opinion, I came to think that it is the most adapted tech to my usage: - I do 90% of my kilometers to commute to work: 2x40km / day - I need my car to drive 7 hours rou

If you look at the benchmark, the model is not particularly good at coding, and as you point out it costs 3x the price of the previous flash models. So what is the market for it? I think that they might have reached the latency sweetspot wh

I am old enough to have ben in business when SGI were a thing. The one thing I remember is that with the UMA arch, the memory was at the center of the design, not the CPU. Not unlike Apple Silicon...

Thx, indeed I was only referring to the article. Not doing a full background check. The GP was not providing any detail.

Any part you are referring to? I can't find any personal attack. I actually like his writing style. I think he just speaks his mind in full honesty and you should not interpret it as aggressivity.

I am surprised that Python is being "threatened by AI writing code", as per the article, but that the said-article never wondered if the AI was more efficient writing in Python or what else. I mean, the Python ecosystem is qualita

Running LLMs locally is one way to realize the level of hardware and infrastructure that frontier AI companies are running. Makes me wonder about future strategies. As one commenter mentioned, 2x Mac Studio M3 Max with 512GB can run frontie

Containerizing every app is what iOS / iPadOS already do. It is regularly pointed out as a drawback by Android users (e.g. "I can't run that doomscrolling blocker in iOS"), but from a security-model perspective it was vi

If there is any learning from the AI craze, it is that there is no coming back on the pace of breach discoveries. Sure we've just faced an acceleration phase and a wave of patches will follow before settling in. But where we used to fi

If you use a Mac, you'd be amazed at how many things can't be done on Windows without 3rd-party software. Do you know how to spot a Windows user ? They print-and-scan to merge their PDFs.

Nuclear is already at a much higher safety standard than 99.99%! About costs: it is actually cheap. 95% of the average total cost of a MWh is in building the plant. Comparisons sometimes show the cost of a MWh from wind or solar, but is a f

@hypendev I am not trying to start a flame war, but let me take a very simple example. As another one put it, we know how to build deep-learning machines. No question about that. My statement is that we don't understand clearly why the

The article I am responding to (which I've read) shows that these LLMs come with all sorts of hacks (= context bits) to make it behave more like this or more like that. There is probably a whole testing workflow at AI companies to twea

This, and similar stories at Anthropic, should remind us that LLM is a sorcery tech that we don't understand at all. - First, deep-learning networks are poorly understood. It is actually a field of research to figure out how they work.

Totally agreed. The fallacy comes from the fact that few people know how to dimension an infrastructure. When you want electricity 24x7, you have to engineer the infra for peak demand. In Europe where I live, it is during winter around 6pm.

100% Writing such an article without mentioning nuclear power is a sign of dishonesty. Wind and solar can't live alone, since they only operate when nature wants it. Perfect match for hydro, but we don't all live in the Hymalaya.

Thing is, Apple never considered racing against LLM runners. Apple's success comes from human-centered design, it is not trying to launch a me-too product just because it increases their stock price. iPod was not the first MP3 player.
