I wouldn't say that my, "entire being opposes the task at hand". I would reserve that sort of language for ethical reservations about a task. I do not do things I consider unethical. But I do encounter many chores in my wor

I use something like this with apache's mod_vhost_alias feature: http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/mod_vhost_alias.html I just create a new directory, and with the wildcard DNS, I have a new dev site.

The CardDav and CalDav stuff was a hassle for me to make work. After the trial and error and googling, getting it set up myself, I pretty much had to grab each family member's mobile device or computer and punch in the magic codes. B

At the risk of saying anything nice about GoDaddy, this seems like it was the right move. Known compromised keys should be revoked. This key was clearly compromised. Now what other Microsoft/Skype/Yahoo/etc keys can we demo

On a side note, I looked through that database dumper script and isn't it just a giant hassle to script non-interactive authentications with OAuth? Hope I never have to do that again.

Haha! Well the page lacks the usual fanfare about cross platform support that I have come to expect from Humble. I noticed it said that the Sims was available for Mac, I had to deduce it was the only one, and Linux support was altogether

Just chiming in to say that I'm a satisfied voip.ms customer. They support e911, have very featureful web-based configuration and very low prices.

I agree with both of you. Mail is hard, not easy. We should host our own email anyway, because the alternatives suck. I wonder if there is a "Mail Admin Best Practices" doc floating around the web yet?

Greylisting does not throw anything out. It does the exact opposite. The mail server simply says, "I have a temporary problem, so I can't take this right now. Try again later" Mail servers are supposed to (and do) try again, at which ti

More likely the rationale is that it's easier to filter stuff asynchronously after it is sitting in queue, and there's no longer a TCP connection hanging off it, waiting for a response. In other words, it's cheaper.

That is the wrong way to run a mail server. I know how common it is at big providers, but it's still wrong. You should REJECT a message if you won't deliver it. If it was a legit message inappropriately REJECTed, then the server that's re

I thought it was pleasant enough to use. I actually have my middle-mouse button remapped to PgDn, so this is more or less how I navigate already. My system doesn't need to use 2/3 of a page for two buttons though.

This is my philosophy as a sysadmin: Everything is my fault, and the direct result of my ignorance. If you believe this, then the solution to all sysadmin problems becomes obvious.

Why is distributed social apparently so hard that we couldn't buy it with $150,000? Is sharing status really a lot more complicated than an RSS feed with public key encryption?

I do something like this and like the workflow quite a bit. I copied it from this guy: http://joemaller.com/990/a-web-focused-git-workflow/ In the comments there's also a nice set up for running a staging server from the same hub repo.
