Measuring growth or shrinkage by % seems like an obvious mistake. While I agree from my own anecdotal evidence this is true, the article doesn’t make any substantial case for this (and the quality is overall pretty poor).

Well, those are the expectations. Low ratings don’t mean being managed out in typical years, but that’s not where we find ourselves. I don’t think the system is perfect, but it is fair. An L5 that missed their expectations is laid off the s

Manager at a different FAANG here. I had a very senior (not L9) engineer laid off on my team. The thing about super senior ICs is that they have super high expectations, ones that are easy to miss. It’s almost silly every performance review

Yup. There’s also a heavy emphasis on relevant experience. I’ve found that only a subset of staff+ engineering roles are open to me because of this, whereas it was all open when I was in a junior role.

Any particular edition of Molecular Biology of the Cell you’d recommend? I just looked up the 7th edition on Amazon (seems like the latest) and it’s $300 USD. Oof.

From what I can tell, there’s not necessarily more. It’s a clear conflict of interest to do business with a source for a story. Doesn’t sound illegal, but certainly gives the appearance of bias.

I think it highlights another problem: performance reviews are heavily bias and management typically has no clue how their reports are actually performing.

I think this comment and its parent have misunderstood what ECS is.

Based on many of the comments here, it seems like there’s a lot of misunderstanding of what an ECS is - unfortunately the name does this no favors as it should probably be written as entity/component/system paradigm or renamed ent

Can you point me to what part of Unreal uses an ECS approach? I’ve never seen this. I know Unity DOTS added ECS features, but that still lives in a hybrid world.

In this particular case it’s estimated that 1.3m people viewed the screen. A fine of ~$60 / user seems pretty hefty and a good deterrent.

This seems like speculation not based in reality. Do Montana, Alaska, Oregon, Delaware, or New Hampshirite do this?

iMessage spam has been through the roof for me the last couple of months. 1 or 2 messages a day with no obvious reporting mechanism. Whatever Apple is doing, it’s not working and it’s disingenuous to claim this is the reason iMessage isn’t

Former owners aren’t middlemen, which is a huge difference. I’m much more ok with a brand deciding they need to raise prices as opposed to someone in the middle doing it and pocketing the difference.

Hex editors are a seriously undervalued learning tool. As a kid, I loved opening up the game files of stuff I was playing and see what I could tweak. I’m not sure this particular editor could replace HxD for me - I’m not seeing process memo

Pretty neat. For me, I’d love to see something like this for YouTube. Perhaps it’s just my bad habits, but I find I generally spend time on what I’d consider quality entertainment (that is, I don’t regret having spent time on it) for Netfli

Driving simulators are a bad example. It’s too easy to learn priors. A better analogy is humans with one eye that still drive - most are taught to induce parallax. Also, I never said they have one camera. Multi camera != multi view.

Monocular vision only seems pretty clearly not capable of solving the problem. Stereo/multi view systems have a shot (humans are proof), but Tesla bet against that long ago. I wonder what could’ve been in a proper multi view setup.

Interestingly, I found tipping less will get you way better service and quicker food. I did some experiments after I found food always comes quicker when my wife orders - turns out she doesn’t overtip like I do. I tried a bunch more times a

Stuff ships because people work hard to make that happen. If one member was dead weight, it’s not fair to simply point to a successful product - other people had to put in the work, probably extra work, to make that happen.

Some developers want none of that, and even those that do will I’m sure argue the fairness/value. If it’s genuinely a good deal then there’s no reason to not allow competition.
