Nix could allow for home installs, however. It would make it useful in a lot more situations.

You can attach the Lambda functions to a VPC. So you can control their outbound IP.

Make does what you tell it to do. While some projects have the setup that you've described, many others do not. Make will only check the timestamps of the generated assets and decide to build (or not) based on that.

Make doesn't work like that.

Kind of off topic, but is something using either Lombok[0] or Manifold[1] to have better ergonomics in Java? It sounds like a brilliant idea to me, but I don't use Java on a daily basis. [0] https://projectlombok.org/

My take on discoverability is exactly being able to figure things out without the need for extensive documentation. The documentation should exist, of course, but you shouldn't need it for every corner.

Is there a way to start a new instance of bash with read-only permissions only? This could easily fix the side-effects issue.

I think autotool's biggest limitation is its UX: it's very difficult to learn what are the good practices, what's deprecated, what new resources are available to make your build scripts more robust. Discoverability is poor. E

Cheap managed cloud services, like AWS SQS and Azure Storage Queue (I usually want some kind of persistence for my queues).

Kafka is a pretty cool technology, but for every project that I work on, it's never used because it feels like it's overkill (costly and operation heavy). Maybe I should start looking for bigger projects :D

I don't think so. For example: Lua was supposed to be the official language for interactive broadcast TV apps in the early 2000s, but it lost to Java due to IT consulting firms pressure.

Kind of off topic, but I've had a colleague once that defined his role on LinkedIn as "Problem Expert". I'd be worried if I had such a role in my company :P

Wow! The sql.js bundle is only 8kb. This is a hidden gem for sure. Thanks for pointing it out! EDIT: It's actually 1.2MB. Thanks for pointing it out :)

I want convergence. I want my smartphone to be my daily driver machine when I connect it to an external monitor, keyboard and mouse. My Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ kind of delivers this with Samsung Dex, but it feels sluggish and clunky and the

Btw, my gurus are working at Comcast. I was kind of surprised to see Perl demand in a company as big as Comcast nowadays.

I've got to say that I'm more tempted to start something with Java + Lombok than Kotlin. Somehow it feels like I'll have an easier time with the tooling, but I'm probably exaggerating.

Thanks for the thoughtful answer. Do you have any recommendation of a good book to solidify my DDD understanding? I've read one in the past (can't remember the name) and that one felt like IT consulting bullshit :)

I agree that the way I've made my statement can be ambiguous. What I meant was when using Node/Python/Go for projects of similar complexity. Maybe not millions of lines of code, but a web app with some order processing, datab

How do you feel about the impact on developer productivity after migrating to Java + Spring Boot? I haven't used Java in a long while and every time that I try to come back to it, I get driven away by the difficulty and complexity to d

Off topic, but the best programmers that I've met so far in my career were Perl gurus. They had this super power where they could implement new tools from scratch and they would feel robust as if they were made by an external vendor or

That's not the point of Worse is Better. The point is that, in this context, Unix and Linux are better than Plan 9, but for non-intuitive reasons.
