That’s a lesson EV drivers in Norway learn very quickly. If you can’t charge at your destination, plan to visit a quick charger nearby, before arrival while the battery is warm from driving. Even using a quick charger, charging is very slow

This. At highway speeds, air resistance dominates the energy consumption. It is roughly proportional to air density, which in turn is inversely proportional to temperature. Compare a nice summer day at 300 K, say, to a really cold day at 24

The interior of Finnmark in northern Norway can get very cold indeed. Temperatures approaching -40 degrees are not unheard of there. The coast is much warmer most of the time as you say.

Oh, what fun! Our system administrator decided once to duplicate the boot partition of a server, so we had a spare should the usual one fail. He used dd of course. And the next day, he was off to a USENIX conference. What he had forgotten,

We had a laser printer in our computer lab that would, once in a while, shift the subscript in a mathematical formula several centimeters to the right. This was in a LaTeX-produced document. In those days, the path to print was LaTeX to dvi

Well, he said it “is like” a fjord, not that it is one. But truth to be told, in some parts of Norway, the word “fjord” can refer to a narrow fresh water lake, often with steep sides. Moreover, some Norwegian lakes have names ending in -fjo

Amusingly, I encountered the same sort of problem on a vastly smaller scale: An electric car with a fully charged 400 V, 64 kWh battery that I could not start for lack of electric power. Said electric power normally to be delivered by a sma

Or as a friend of mine suggested, more than ten years ago and only half in jest, I think: just block all porn sites on IPv4 (but not on IPv6). The demand for IPv6 will soon be overwhelming.

I’ve been using Mitsuharu’s port for years, always compiling it myself from his bitbucket repo. I am no longer sure how different it is from the vanilla GNU distribution. When I first started using emacs, long before the Mac port, the curre

Huh. I owned a Citroen Ami back in the seventies. It was a gas car (two cylinder air cooled engine), much like the 2CV but made to look a bit more like a conventional car. Interesting that they decided to reuse the name.

I can recommend using the “hack” app to read HN on the phone. Voting is done by swiping, so it’s much easier to avoid unintended downvotes. (edit: I don’t know if it’s available on android, though. I’m an iphone user myself.)

Thanks, that is helpful to know. However, a switch-mode power supply is quite different from a reactive load. Cheap ones tend to draw power only near the voltage peaks, whereas better ones improve on that. See [1] and [2]. So the question r

I have been wondering about that. Are these meters built on the assumption of a purely resistive load, or will they give accurate readings even with a switch mode power supply? My very limited understanding says these draw current in a very
