Tech isn't only the internet. Microsoft and Apple both went public before the Internet and managed to do quite well without it. Correlation != causation. Might as well graph it against the number of World Cup or Euro championships in that y

Since this is super handy, I will go off-topic and post the Windows equivalent: start . You can even type something like: start mypicture.jpg To open it in the default picture viewer.

In my experience modifying existing C#/Java in such a manner is not a big deal since the type system and the language enable extremely powerful refactoring tools like Resharper. But your point is fair. It is a tradeoff between flexibility a

We are faced with the dilemma - a lot of the code is now reliant on Isin, and NullReferenceExceptions are getting thrown all over the place because the field isn’t getting populated Sounds like it's catching bugs. You get to fix a

Why is non-blocking IO radical? Tons of libraries and frameworks offered it much before node, including twisted, Java's NIO, and the entire System.Net namespace in .NET. Other than that, surprisingly sensible advice.

Sorry should have clarified that it's not run in-house but rather supported for full-on production deployments, from what I have heard.

But that's not true. Plenty of .NET users do use other OSs (through Mono) and databases (I use MySQL). Sure, the best IDE is VS and there's tons more docs and support on using it all on Windows, but the same can be said of Rails with Linux

What exactly makes it enterprisey? I am always really unclear on what makes something "enterprisey" other than perceptions.

What is "enterprisey" about .NET? Mono is a real alternative, many businesses run it production, including the likes of Fog Creek.

Optimal solution assuming that you've got perfectly accurate arbitrary precision arithmetic. Which is as likely as a unicorn that poops Haagen-Dazs.

There are much better ways to implement a concurrent queue than the ones shown. Using locks for every single queue/dequeue is a very good way to completely kill performance. A much better alternative is to use hand-over-hand locking, or use

Acela is awesome and I prefer it to flying when going from Boston to NYC and back, but you can really tell that the tracks are old. The ride is nowhere near as smooth as the trains in Europe, especially when you hit 150 mph.

Avoiding the Microsoft tax, but bought a copy of Windows to run in a VM? Most universities have full-duplex 100Mbit+, and at those speeds it's not your connection that's the bottleneck, it's the latency of getting your request to the server

There seems to be some confusion about the XMPP definition of OTR as defined in XEP-0136 which does not mention encryption ( http://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0136.html#otr ) and the colloquial use of OTR which apparently means "encrypted IM."

OTR has nothing to do with encryption. All it says is "pretty please don't save my conversation." The only way for fully encrypted conversations is to use a plugin that encrypts messages themselves, or use an ecrypted P2P IM network.

The spaghetti code of node.js callbacks is really a problem of Javascript lacking monads, and in this case something like the Async monad from F#. TameJS is a step in the right direction by adding a C#-style await.

This is very unsurprising. The majority of IPOs are underpriced and in some ways the underpricing is a measure of success. There has been a lot of research done on the topic of underpricing for book-built IPOs (like this one). The most popu
