At this point, arguing about democracy feels like the political equivalent of saying "I went to Paris, and spent the whole time moaning that I couldn't get Del Taco." I guess it doesn't matter if a country is raising it

What I prefer about cash is that it enforces a different attitude towards money. If you have a pile of notes or coins and watch them diminish, it definitely changes your attitude towards spending versus "present a card, and at the end

I'm confused as to what a "cashless card-based transaction" would be. I'm wondering if they meant 'contactless'. That would fit with the other concept. As long as the infrastructure is up, they may prefer con

ISTR seeing they did 4U with 120mm instead of dual 80 too. That always looked compelling, because I figured a 4U rackmount would make a neat desktop-style case, but I could never justify the price.

For years, I've been wondering when the data bubble was going to burst. The whole "we'll make a TV with a $700 BOM and sell it for $600 because the viewing data is so valuable " situation. The "we'll burn val

The right answer is media savvy. We need to be raising our kids to have an appropriate amount of distrust of all media, to understand where it's coming from, who backs it, and what their motivations are. Then they can consume it respo

I'm curious what message investor/startup types take out of this. I bought some Baidu shares (like $500 worth) many years ago and I never heard the end of it from people saying "don't invest in the PRC, they'll nati

I guess the other side of the coin is, right now, what is the killer client app for Wayland? If I have an X11 desktop that works for me, why should I bother launching a new compositor plus XWayland, or looking for native replacements for m

I thought Brazil was famous for their trade barriers on electronics. ISTR that was the reason that some platforms (i. e. the Sega Genesis) had absurd longevity there-- there was a local license-built version at a reasonable price, and if y

You can actually load MS-DOS and PC-DOS high on an XT, if you have a memory card that populates UMBs, but you need DOSMAX and a utility like USE!UMBS. It doesn't seem to work with FreeDOS though. I've been able to get like 605k

FreeDOS tends to be surprisingly heavy compared to "era-appropriate" DOS revisions. I have an 8MHz 186-class hobby machine, and PC DOS 2000 is lighter and some of its utilities are snappier than FreeDOS's. I suspect on a 386

We don't even need to get into "desperation" arguments. I support their efforts to copy and extend 100%. Western states deserve to have their asses handed to them on this. This was a double-whammy of stupid assumptions: th
