I think in our industry a cover letter might send a negative signal. In other fields a cover letter is a sign that you’re a “go-getter”. A good software engineer is two things: in high demand, and a professional problem solver. A cover lett

Interesting take. I think Louis CK had a joke in his last special about how “We can stop making new porn now”. Sounds like that might be what’s happening. The idea that an industry might contract and die because it’s historic catalog and fr

If I were in management I would take the deal from Blackstone, but only on the immutable condition that Blackstone defray all of the legal losses that may or may not arise from their proposal. See how much they really believe in this idea

At the Kubecon demo yesterday they cracked a joke about promising to support more architectures. They seem to sincerely want to, which is why they donated the project to OpenStack. Honestly it seems really cool, the spin up time is damn imp

This is one of the most facile comments I’ve seen on HN. You are backing up your claims with absolutely zero data. More work goes into general purpose operating systems than ever before. The commit rate on Linux, the BSDs is higher than eve

When wireless gets good enough to replace most home set ups, being an ISP will become a race to the bottom, and I have to imagine that Net Neutrality (audited by someone reputable) will be a consumer demand that helps differentiate.

Also notary from docker can prevent MIM injection in the layers as they are being uploaded and downloaded (a surprisingly easy task actually, I think someone did it without having to break SSL).

I agree with much of what you said, but I think the word “infancy” is pretty strong. Containers are actually older than VMs (going back to the old tymeshare days of the 60s, but also in Linux right after 2001). Multi-tenant containers are r

It has been partially addressed you can enable username spacing in docker, but it is not the default. Additionally per tenant user namespacing is not yet possible with docket (though it is in the kernel).

AppArmor actually relies partly on seccomp, which is actually quite fast and is in the kernel.

It is much easier to opt out of the Facebook “Net State” than the Google one, IMO. I have never been on Facebook, family members email me, I still get invited to things, etc. I really don’t see what I’m missing by not being on it aside from

I do have to say that it has been really annoying to watch my front end team miss deadlines to keep up with Angular versions. They also seem to introduce pretty basic bugs. What annoys me the most is there no reason for our product to have

Linux does offer enough primitives to completely sandbox processes, as Zones and Jails did/do. The problem is that docker didn't implement all of those primitives right away, the biggest being user namespacing, which it didn'

Why is it binary? I'm pretty sure you can focus on both. Also, it's not hard to get candidates that are non-diverse, almost by definition the status quo favors their hiring, hence the diversity programs.

The memo suffered from a lack of 2nd order thinking. If Google really is using its diversity programs to "lower the bar", that's what should have been proven and addressed, whether men and women have innate differences in tal

Personally I think the biggest caveat avoided "when job differences are accounted for" is the care of children. Women, by-and-large, really get hosed with the negative externalities of having children (time off, career halting, et
