I don't use foreign key constraints on the database. I create all fields as NOT NULL and use empty string in place of NULL. Last time I tried foreign key constraints can't work in an environment like this.

There's also HTTP HEAD requests, and "304 Not Changed" that you need to take care of. This is what makes static site download look instantaneous. There's more of such optimizations. With all these I find it better to sti

This. Qmail was lightweight. Postfix was considered robust but reliable without security holes. And then at some point postfix took over qmail as the default.

> I suppose it may not run efficiently that way, but it would run. And you don't have the built-in html templating with php, where any html file is also a valid php file. Indeed. On an abstract level anything can be done. Efficiency

I tried the "run a C program as cgi" on the web. Request per second per server dropped significantly. Later converted those into fcgi and throughput increased drastically, like an increase of 10 times over previous. But fcgi is a

PHP is now a days ran as fcgi, just like how Python, Ruby or Go runs. The Apache mod days have been left in the past. That you can't render a python script.py like php's script.php more likely has to do with language construction

Every article titled like "too bad to be true" are eventually found to be "the story's not what the title says". This one wasn't an exception either.

Another easy shot at it is to install your proxy server for OSM tiles [these are served with a simple API from OSM site] and cache the images locally with periodic purge every six months, for example. For giving back to the community, you c

How? The client needs to know what the resources are to create a bloom filter. It doesn't know that before 1st request.

Even that didn't work last time I checked, which was years back. Did it, reload the page, and then watch all the ads still there, but some random div panel getting lost that you need. Facebook did it intentionally. So that ad blockers

I installed a popular ad blocker for facebook from chrome store some months back. Was surprised that it's still working now. Generally those don't work after a few days.

PNG support was broken and partial on browsers at that time. People were waiting for PNG but it wasn't ready yet. Plus this wasn't the only page on burn GIF. This call was on thousands of sites. A viral movement from that time.

Interesting fact. Burn GIF called for using JPEG as alternative. And then some years later JPEG patent/payment issues came up. Leading to a short lived Burn JPEG movement too. Next alternate shown was PNG at that time.

"Any C alternative will be expected to be on par with C in performance. The problem is that C have practically no checks, so any safety checks put into the competing language will have a runtime cost, which often is unacceptable. This

This article doesn't touch it as it's a new game they are developing, but I used to wonder a lot how much are indie game devs making? Is it worth it? Can one expect to earn like a full time job working on it?

It's interesting how we have come full circle from "Reference counting is the worst of two worlds [manual and GC] and will always be slower" to now "Well, we all know it's actually faster." in like 10 years.

You need to measure memory usage with it, take the product of the two (memory and speed), and thus get a very good number on performance for comparison.

We stand on the shoulders of giants. That had been the way for decades. A newer stack over the older one without much thought. And someone in the future will build even a newer stack over the current ones.
