This line of reasoning remind me of new-age "theorists" talking about how quantum physics supports their view. The fact that people use words imprecisely or nonsensically does not somehow automatically make their formulations reas

I had this happen to me years ago while driving on an isolated stretch of highway with no streetlights or other ambient light. Suddenly the engine cut off and it was completely dark while rolling down the highway. Needless to say, it scared

I think he's saying he likes the type inference in addition to the static typing (no inference in Java).

I understood the "open" comment to mean "open to modification and extension", independent of whether it is dying out.

Wouldn't a bicycle be a lousy transport during the winter or when it's raining? Or when you need to carry something like a suitcase to the airport that's 20 miles away? Your reasoning seems to be incompatible with a bus system too.

I've been learning Haskell lately but I've seen the same idiom in other functional languages. I was struck by two things you said: you have to know cons'ing to understand x::xs and each symbol, x and xs should be unambiguously named in isol

According to http://blogs.msdn.com/b/microsoft_press/archive/2012/10/29/f... on p.36, ipc between apps is blocked for Win 8 Store apps. If this is required by an application, you have to run it in the desktop. Deprecating the desktop won'

Well... you would have to trust both the gem author and those who might have compromised an author's credentials. And my understanding is that the install can easily be running under a different set of credentials than normal use. (not a Ru

As others mentioned, Clojure makes it fairly simple to generate a normal Java class containing your Clojure code. In addition, you can access clojure.lang.RT to run your Clojure function directly, like this: RT.loadResourceScript("pkg1/pk

This comment packs a lot of confusion into very few words. You're conflating a factory abstraction like Spring with dependency injection. void foo(Reader r) { / do stuff with r / } ... foo(new BufferedReader(new FileReader("/log.txt"))); Th

C# has closures but why do you say it has first class functions? I'm pretty new to C# but I thought all functions still must be members of a class. Yes you can pass delegates to, or return them from, a function but they cannot stand alone.

Yes that's right. Not that I don't believe in minimum wage, per se, but that I don't believe in laws generally that prevent people from interacting with each other in accordance with each person's self interest. Or if I want to avoid pedant

I don't get this attitude toward SO. Most of the people who go there get the answers they seek, including experts with questions outside their domain of expertise. I hear all sorts of people fretting about how to give back to the community

What about the following sentence? "At no point do we or should we say, `Now that we have defined an abstract group, let's assume they exist'. Either we can demonstrate they exist by constructing some, or the theory becomes vacuous." Doesn'
