Knowing if the user's over 18 doesn't imply total surveillance, it only implies a user profile setting that says if they're over 18.

In a sense, surveillance is a multiplier on your goons, creating virtual goons. If you have 5 goons but you can send them directly to the house of people who disagree with the government with 99% accuracy, it's like you had 500 goons w

At 1x1 I don't expect any difference. It would be the average of all pixels in the image if you don't unevenly weight them (which you might decide when choosing a main color, but no downscaling algorithm would do) and the only dif

The BBS software itself would have likely ran on the PCs, one instance per simultaneous user, and because it's a single-tasking OS, that means one simultaneous user per PC. They aren't just bridging packets to a single central mul

It also takes work to keep it working and it may have a lot of bugs already, that are hard to fix because of it. A non-E2EE chat app is very easy to make.

Normal people don't choose a messaging app based on E2EE but based on whether their friends use it.

Fine, a drop-down menu, not a checkbox. They're throwing a hissy fit over a drop-down menu with 4 items.

Yes, it's very useful to parents who want to restrict their children's computer use. Some of those parents use Linux. Yes, it does.

How has HN gotten to this point where citing the actual text of a proposed law is downvoted while wild speculation is not? There are already laws about OSes, that they shouldn't spy on you and so on.

If my job was to promote open source software it would make sense to ban proprietary software. That doesn't mean I should actually be allowed to do that.

The CA/CO/IL law where the root user just sets the age of the child's user seems pretty sensible.

This is not being supported because the size of the step is small, but because the step itself makes sense. The slippery slope argument says that open source software is a stepping stone to a world where all commercial activity is banned. S

Are there any other places this argument could apply or is it specifically this one? Like if I said "Yes, the university reserves the right to expel students who defecate on the teacher's desk. But we all know where this is going.

It doesn't ask for any attestation. It's literally just a user profile setting that can be changed by the root user.
