Wait but nobody doing that kind of work makes anywhere near $20/hour. Retail store managers are still trying to get that.

A similar argument can be made about the H1-B program. I don’t know if this is still the case, but a few years ago the stats on all H1-B visa-holders showed they were paid on average around $80K despite mostly being in technical roles at F5

There’s a lot of useful stuff on Reddit but you do have to be careful as “upvoted” stuff is sometimes wrong and “downvoted” stuff is sometimes right. My bigger issue with it is that volunteer-mods are often power-hungry and ban people who t

Actually, higher inflation doesn’t necessarily correspond to higher variable interest rates. Indirectly, yea, but only because the fed is raising the benchmark rate to “fight inflation”.

I have 8 YoE and have worked at 4 places (excluding an internship), 5 if you count a longer-term moonlighting role. We'll just say 4. You'd probably still find this to be "bad", it's about 2 years per role. I would

I tend to be the one who comments code the most on my team. I’ve learned how often and what to comment via my side projects. I tend to stop and go with them, sometimes going a year or two before picking them back up again. You figure out wh

I'm pretty sure this is all 100% correct so why are the haters hating? Anyone who has googled around on ECC info knows that there are many arguments on forums about what ECC RAM does and how valuable it is and when. For example, colloq

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think the Nvidia Linux drivers were ever bad, they just weren’t open-source and Linus Torvalds didn’t like that the open-source nouveau drivers sucked.

macOS has been breaking my heart lately. Some of it is a consequence of being on ARM instead of x86, but some of it is the OS- for example, I don’t have to tell this group Docker on macOS is the worst (versus Linux and Windows). The theory

I wouldn’t go all the way down to “thin-client” like the Wyse stuff. NUCs and SFF/micro PCs are the next step up and usually have i3/i5/i7 CPUs… but depending on your needs, a thin-client isn’t out of the question.

But laptop batteries typically last several hours, which most UPSes are meant to last a matter of minutes, so even a 5-year-old laptop battery will likely meet or exceed UPS performance.

It’s gotten a lot easier to run NVidia GPUs on Linux since Linus first gave Nvidia the finger all those years ago. It’s usually a matter of running a single package manager command.

In my research, there’s a lot of conflicting info about ECC RAM, but it seems like it’s not able to guarantee data integrity over long periods of time, but for enterprise situations, the relatively small premium is worth having if it preven

You’re paying a premium to get old macs instead of old NUCs. Best value is a NUC or SFF/thin client from Dell, HP or Lenovo.

I just don't think there was really anyone who was putting effort into hacking the Xbox One just because they wanted the feature that they now get out of the box- sideloading/running unsigned code in a VERY sandboxed environment t

I’m not sure why crippling a niche feature would drive people to try to jailbreak the Xbox One. It really is a useless feature unless you are developing an app/game for the Xbox One- then you won’t have to spend however much on a dev k

I propose instituting a 4-day workweek and cutting everyone’s pay by 10-20%. Some will no doubt resign (saving the company money), but the rest will instantly save the company 10-20% in labor costs. If all those studies out there are to be

The person I’m replying to make it sound like Xbox Dev Mode came about because Microsoft was tired of trying to keep hackers out, but the reality is Microsoft has kept hackers out. You can’t jailbreak an Xbox One.

I don’t think Xbox Dev Mode is really worth a damn. You can sideload apps but it’s not a vector for piracy or running Windows or Linux. PS3 Linux was about as useless as PS2 Linux, because the PS3 had only 256MB of RAM. I put Ubuntu Server
