That's signatures needed - the amount remaining before in theory it gets a response from the White House. It means people have been signing the petition like gangbusters. Probably thanks to BoingBoing.

The comments on this post are depressing. Whatever your attitude about the White House's goofy petition site, the efficacy of 'online activism', or what-have-you, Aaron Swartz's grieving partner thinks signing this petition will help shed a

The "don't do it if it's going to make you miserable" stance is a nice switch from the usual "startups are suffering so go read some Marcus Aurelius" attitude we get around here.

Now I get to see what's stronger - my desire to try Mailbox or the fingernails-on-chalkboard irritation of an app on my phone that doesn't do anything.

Not being a jerk at all. If it's alienating, it's alienating. Although it's interesting, because I like being targeted. If someone organized a nearby tech event that was accompanied by a big rack of ribs and an evening of firing off guns

Oh, I wasn't making any judgements. Male crowd, female crowd, whoever the organizers want at their event is perfectly fine by me - after all, it's their event. I'm just interested in the tools they use to get wherever they want to be.

Pairing an activity with another highly-gendered activity will most definitely change the gender ratio of your combined activities. Here 'yoga' is playing the role 'pizza and beer' does at most hackathons - I know there's tons of exceptions

Hopefully someone from Readmill is around to satisfy my curiosity - why would someone raise an eyebrow at that? When I commuted into and around NYC, reading on a larger-than-phone device was always totally unremarkable, so I'm confused. T

This is likely happening because the public is more likely to click on an arrest-related ad for a black-sounding name. Higher click-through rates mean higher ad quality scores, which in turn mean lower minimum cost-per-click rates, which in

Sure, the first verse of my translated study Torah is 'When God was about to create heaven and earth...' This corrected interpretation's not particularly new, either - it's based on a commentary from an 11th century rabbi. However, like it

Whatever the merits or demerits of the copy-paste blocker's argument are, surely I'm not the only person who highlights text on the Internet as I read it, or who regularly right-clicks and uses commands from the context menu. I doubt I'll b

Really? The King James Version of the Bible has the most beautiful language of the batch and will help you understand much about modern literature. Compare that to something like the somewhat-more-accurate but dry-as-dust New Revised Standa

Sure, although if you want to read the Torah / Tanakh as Jews understand it, I wouldn't just pick up a Bible. Assuming you don't read Hebrew, I'd get the New Jewish Publication Society translation.

I wouldn't recommend the King James Version of the Bible for its religious content, not being a Christian and all, but it's essential for understanding half the allusions of English literature. If you haven't, try it. The 1769 Authorized Ve

I don't think my parents are assholes. Sure, I did when I was a teenager, but that's because I was egocentric and had poor impulse control - in short, a teenager. Thank god my parents were doing their job instead of trying to be my buddy.
