You don't need a loopback decoder for that. The periodic extraction will depend on a filter, and you can just clone and send the output of that filter to the tiling filter.

API users shouldn't pay attention to the ffmpeg version but those of the libraries. API and ABI breaks only happen at major version bumps of those.

That's not big enough to include even most native components. My essentials build with only common 3rd party libs (like libx264) compresses to 20MB with LZMA2.

The ffmpeg cli supports multiple inputs and multiple outputs, so there needs to be a way to unambiguously map an option to its target. Position is looked at, to group options for the same target together.

Don't do this. Place both ss and t before the input -i. As output options, ss waits till the first KF after the given value, it's not a seek. With a t of 2, that may very well result in an empty video stream.

It may have to do with limitations of allocating memory chunks on 32-bit machines when these formats were originally designed. The decoder allocates a contiguous buffer that can hold the whole image.
