Dumb question: Why did they name this "Subsystem for Linux"? (Old name was Interix, subsystem for UNIX-based applications , or "SUA".) Does marketing/users believe there is a distinction between Linux as a kernel

I should have guessed. I use their libc6 package for q)k) under /emul/linux and in the past the live.debian.org images occasionally but that is about as much as I know about Debian. Apologies for my ignorance.

The Debian wiki page appears to be about reproducible builds for packages . The NetBSD wiki entry is about progress on reproducible builds for tools, kernel and userland . As for packages, reproducible builds under pkgsrc is still a WIP.

Your comment is lucid and makes good sense. Why readers are downvoting it shall remain a mystery.

I am too lazy to look it up on the mailing lists but a while back I recall ESR contacted certain BSD projects trying to convince them to change to Git. I mistook it for the occasional incoherent spam that slips through the filters.

While HN is discussing XNU sycalls, anyone know why the most fundamental of syscalls, execve, according to NeXT/Apple's post-UNIX wisdom needs to have an extra "char *apple[]" argument vector? Not to imply that it is &qu

With all due respect for your comment, that is not how I see it. I adjusted my "workflow" to what was available for the past decades: HTTP/1.1 pipelining. It has worked for me with no problems. And I am sharing this experi

HTTP/1.1 pipelining works beautifully for requesting web pages or other files in bulk from a single domain. I would imagine "bots" like Googlebot make use of it. I have been using it daily for 15 years with no problems. I ma

Not sure about GNU, but BSD build systems depend on AWK for building installation media. crunchgen, a compiled C program, has to call AWK. Anyone out there do AWK-less builds? Why did I need to learn a little AWK? Because I could work out h
