Most of the page-load delay tends to come from dropped packets and unnecessary round-trips, rather than from bandwidth limitations.

Might this be the reason that I've heard complaints about choppiness of pans in The Hobbit at 24 fps? (When they show a 24 fps version of a 48 fps movie, do they just drop half the frames?)

I think the theory is supposed to be that you don't enable adb unless you know what you're doing. (As far as I can recall, adb works fine with the screen locked. The fact that I don't know for sure suggests that I do not, in fact, know what

You would want to do something clever with the data lines. If you are making the 'USB condom' for yourself, just short the data lines at the device end to enable fast charging (and be careful never to plug it into a computer.) If you're mak

You're right -- as an Android user, I was thinking about the USB 3.0 charging standard (and the pre-standard behavior which led to it), which Android devices generally follow. If you have an iDevice, you have more work to do.

If you want a standards-compliant 'fast charge', you need to short the data lines to the device. If you merely cut the data lines, I don't know what the device will do. Probably it will draw 100mA, which is the permissible draw for a USB de

Hm, I am Not Happy about a feature of the new protocol. It's unfortunate that -- although I can hear the gears of politics turning in the document -- the details of the argument that spawned it are not laid out there for me to read. In this

"Bud" is an abbreviation of "buddy", an informal term for "friend." "Bud" is also a slang term for marijuana (which is made from the buds of the cannabis plant.)

That depends on who you ask and how you look at it. Google has always insisted that it's only IP that's relevant to Google's business. Critics (such as myself) have always retorted that ANYTHING can be construed to be relevant to Google's b

There is one easy way to solve this problem that I can think of: Neuter a USB cable by shorting the data pins on the device end and disconnecting them on the charger end. Just be careful not to plug the resulting cable into a computer -- yo

That provision of the agreement wasn't the reason I quit, but it was a little rock in my shoe that never went away until I did. If you add up the total number of people at Google who have complained about that rock, and the number of people

I (with minimal physics background, I admit) would bet on systematic error. We're seeing one mass from one decay path, and a _very slightly different_ mass from a different decay path. The best explanation seems to _me_ to be that, for one

At some point it becomes silly to keep adding 'phases of matter'. And if you want to be exhaustive, don't forget the other oddball types: the high-density states like neutronium, the high-energy states like quark-gluon plasma, etc.

Ahh, when I wrote that comment I was thinking of residential ISPs. I agree that there is more competition in the wireless ISP space, and I don't think we're getting shafted _too_ badly by the pay-by-the-byte plans there, compared to what I

Electricity, gas, and water all have something critical in common: they are heavily regulated, so you're paying more or less cost for them. When Internet usage gets metered, it's because the carriers think it will allow them to massively ov

Question: What is your revenue model? What is your motivation not to go the way of the article we were all just reading, reminding us never to trust a platform because it will shut down and leave us with our thumbs up our asses?

One thing I would recommend is trying with a different USB cable. I have found that microusb cables are often flaky, and a flaky cable produces very weird and hard-to-diagnose errors.

I think inheritance basically _is_ composition plus self-recursion. You get into trouble because of the self-recursion. Any time a base class method calls another base class method, that call is part of the class's interface, because when y

This doesn't work because there is no moment at which the state is 'known' or 'detangled'. There is no way to tell, by observing one particle, when the other particle was observed. If there was you could send a signal with it, which would b

I noticed the author speculating about color, so I colorized it based on the identity of the largest prime: http://jsfiddle.net/HEHHj/2/ It actually uses the last prime drawn, so it's only useful in 'smallest first' mode. That ought to be
