At the risk of coming across as being a spoilsport, I think when someone says "anyone can write a calculator app", they just mean an app that simulates a pocket calculator (which is indeed pretty easy) as opposed to one which alwa

Original quote is just mind-bogglingly stupid. If If I can't read any programming language, that's a defect on my part. If I can read pretty much any language except k and brainfuck, that's a sign k is particularly difficult

Is your objection that maybe it only looks like a power law distribution for the more common "words", but if you go further out the fit isn't very good? Does it really mean anything if some other curve fits the data better?

I don't think anyone disputes that animal vocalizations carry information. You can demonstrate pretty directly that they get some meaning from human words. But afaik (and please correct me if I am wrong) no species other than humans ha

I have yet to see anyone argue that twitter has a right to operate in Germany in defiance of German laws. I have seen people in other threads argue that, rather than comply with Chinese laws, american companies should cease to to business i

Has "the AI did it" ever been a valid defense? I can see why the legislature might want to make it explicit that it is not, but surely it can't be the case that harm caused by an AI is treated as if it were an act of God.

Why is counting lines easier than just using numbers? A vector is a 1 tensor, a matrix is a 2 tensor, a 3 tensor is a 3 tensor, and a scalar is a zero tensor!

I think a pin is only supposed to be a second line of defense, like entering your zip code with your credit card. People who use 1234 as an ATM pin think their card prolly won;t get stolen, and if it is, the machines all have cameras so you

If you want to be pedantic, it really isn't a number at all, it's a string of digits. A lot of "serial numbers" and "material part numbers" are not only not numbers, they're not even all digits.

I was under the impression that bzip compresses more than gzip, but gzip is much faster, so gzip is better for things that need to be compressed on the fly, and bzip is better fro things that get archived. Is this not true? Wouldn't it

It really isn't. The "tic tacs" example is deliberately absurd, but here in California it is illegal to eat horses as a result of a ballot initiative, but it's fine to eat cows and pigs, and most people do. You can argue
