At first I thought the same thing, but this guy is in the UK where the debate has moved on from 'whether global warming is real' to 'what to do about it'. He says: "However much we agree on the fundamentals of the physics of climate change,

But has this ever truly happened? Even if we go back all the way to Archimedes, we'll find his science intertwined with warfare, ship building, public works and various other 'statist' concerns. Or take Galileo - surely not just doing scien

Bizarre. The "I'm going to win in 2010" and the donation rules make it sound like campaign money, but you're right, 'option 4' is nebulous. I guess I'm lost too.

I have sort of the opposite take. I have smoked maybe 10 cigarettes in my life, but I think smoking is enjoyable. I don't do it because of the adverse health effects, but otherwise I'd love to have an occasional smoke while programming.

Welcome to CO. I've always found it amazing how people put up with rush hour traffic commutes. To waste a solid hour (or more), 5 days a week, doing something thoroughly unpleasant seems insane to me. I'd be willing to trade off a lot in li

In this case though, the choice of hashing algorithm is at least as important as the salt. If the attacker was motivated to have Jeff Atwood's password, he could have grabbed the salted hash and used a password cracker against it. We're tal

Regarding 2), I think it would be fair to say that the compromised site was in fact the one that did not use OpenID and instead stored passwords poorly. Once compromised, it exposed user credentials which could then be used elsewhere. Had t

Other interesting books, in addition to the excellent "Soul", are "Show Stopper!", which covers the development of Windows NT, "Microserfs" (fiction) by Douglas Coupland, and "Proudly Serving My Corporate Masters". These are centered on MS

That's a great point about being _employed_ as an engineer, but the reality you describe is more tied to their 'mode' of work (ie, an employee at a certain type of company) than to the field itself. There are horrible programming gigs out t

As someone who creates a lot of diagrams, I disagree. Most diagramming tools require me to spend 80% of my effort on layout issues to make diagrams look good. I would much rather have a mini language in which I can express my diagram than f

It's unclear to me exactly what's going on, but "'brute force techniques' - mass dialing until something 'interesting' is found" Sounds an awful lot like war dialing. Not sure what was on the other side though and what got done.

No, it's supposed to evolve. And what makes sense when you're getting started may not be the best use of your time later on.

By all means, play around with different languages when you're getting started. I think it's really important to be exposed to different languages as part of your education, be it undergrad or (for you as it was for me) junior/high school.

I thought about that too. They stayed out because two of those guys mirrored would have broken the $1,000. But yea, it's definitely good return on the money. If you've got a couple hundred more, I'd go for it.

Hi, I did read their post when it came out a while back, but I did not use their parts list for this computer or look at it recently. Looking at it now, the 3 common parts were the CPU, motherboard, and case. Both the motherboard and the CP
