Not only distrust of politicians. I'd say the mainstream media have suffered from a similar loss of trust over the last years because most outlets simply repeat official guidance from the WHO or national agencies.

Not really. I've played it safe by buying a Linux desktop box in addition to my MacBook. elementary OS was fun (esp. the Daily build) because so many things can be fixed on an evening by sending a small PR, and they also receive suppor

Before the mid 2010s, we talked about how the 99% could avoid concentration of power and wealth in the 1%. Now the richest and worst companies in the world paste BLM rainbow flags on their website, and suddenly large swaths of society have

This too. I sometimes boot a PowerPC iMac from 2004 to rip a CD, and it's amazing how little Apple has broken/removed since then, while adding gestures, cloud syncing, and all sorts of tiny quality-of-life improvements.

Thanks. I've tried it when it came out and wasn't really convinced. The video on its homepage looks better now, I'll give it another try when I'm on Linux again.

I'd agree if we were talking about desktop machines, which are basically a box around a GPU, CPU, and some networking. The situation there is infinitely better than on the M1 Mac Mini. But if I go and buy a random Windows _laptop_ and

I am aware that for GPUs specifically, the driver situation on Linux is pretty good (minus the Nvidia/Wayland friction). But a laptop is more than just a GPU and a CPU. When I was shopping around a few years ago, the fingerprint reader

Apple has kept the M1 Macs open for other operating systems, which is why a project like Asahi Linux can exist: https://asahilinux.org Apple doesn't provide Linux drivers for their components, but neither does "anyone

I love elementary, although I couldn't make 6.0 work on my Nvidia-based machine (something has changed about the driver installation?). What annoys me is that AppCenter takes up so much space in their blog posts and sponsoring campaign

The question is, where does ObjC end and where does Swift start? When Apple announced an Objective-C without the C, I assumed they'd keep the Smalltalk object system and message passing. It still boggles my mind that they took a hard t

It's a great example though, I really like how readable Homebrew formulae are. Run "brew edit go" or "brew edit pkg-config" to take a look at how things are downloaded and built.

Some, yes. But in my experience, Xcode is/was amazingly responsive right until the first Swift file or IBDesignable class is added to a project. Then something happens in the background and everything starts to crawl.

Fair enough, but I also don't see why we should judge languages based on the absolute worst projects written in them. For example, the offshore Swift programmers I've encountered will add "?? 0", "?? []" etc. i

Lacking capabilities also means fewer decisions. If you want to model something in ObjC, it's a class, full stop. In Swift you have the choice between classes and structs. There are generally more degrees of freedom. Just observe how m
