So you actually have to use a fork of MySQL to get online schema changes? I was thinking this was just a drop-in of some sort.

It is a bit surprising how long it took for that to land. On the plus side, replication is very easy and low latency with 9.3. There's still a bit to do on the auto-failover front, but that may end up being more of a third party undert

CREATE INDEX CONCURRENTLY, ALTER, and others. Batteries included. This has saved our bacon a number of times. The only kind of DB-related downtime we have is when we're doing a Postgres upgrade.

I guess that means "No, it's an unofficial, third party toolkit".

I deal with Postgres a good bit, but will be the first to tell you that pgAdmin has got some issues. It's a very clunky, buggy, moody piece of software. I've had better luck learning how to use the psql command/shell than mes

> Some people have quite a dependency on Postgres Our dependency on Postgres is more to do with it being a lot safer with our data. It doesn't silently fail, the transactions have a better failure mode, and as previously pointed out

I've suspected this is probably part of it, but wouldn't know where to begin proving/testing it. At this point, I'm not sure I even care. There are some definite positives, though. I'm not tempted at all by junk foo

There are also those of us that derive no joy from eating. Eating is an inconvenience to me. I have zero sweet tooth, and I don't have many cravings for specific foods. I'd rather be doing any number of other things, like reading,

I'd have to agree that the standard Docker terminology would be much preferred. Your business covers what is a pretty cutting edge, advanced concept right now. Your customers are likely to be at least somewhat understanding of the stan

I do hope the 1&2 GB types have seen performance boosts, because at $30 and $60/month respectively, you're a bit above Linode, which is pretty performance-focused. Without very good performance from this "Performance 1&qu

This is definitely a nice improvement, but it's hard for me to get excited about it since it isn't available on the lower end. I'd be all over this if I could get a 1-2GB VM with the extra speed, though I understand that Rack

Also, these things are priced pretty cheaply for what you get. Even if you buy a new one every year, you're still coming in cheaper than buying most high end smartphones.

The "open" part of this is being blown up a bit out of proportion, I think. Nothing stops other OEMs from replacing the Play apps (the closed part of this) with their own. Are you an developer at an OEM? I'm just not sure why

I believe the device itself is smaller, they've just thinned the bezel and made the screen use the entire front surface of the device.

As a fellow backend developer, this KY site doesn't look ugly to me. It looks minimal, seems to be pretty easy to get around, and seems to fulfill its purpose very well. It loads incredibly fast, and the text is all easy to understand.

An interesting opposite is the previously mentioned Planetside 2. It was initially released for PC only, and was a resource hog. Now they're working on bringing it to the PS4, so they're having to do an extremely aggressive round

It was surprisingly easy. I'm not saying you over-paid, but for $2,500 I could have built something pretty ridiculous. Most of my money went into processor and GPU, which are typically your two big ticket items. I trolled around Newegg

I built a dev/gaming machine back in early 2010. It's stout, but not a ridiculously expensive (~$1,000) behemoth. The only thing I've done since then is toss some more RAM in so I could have two sets of triple channel DDR3 in

I'm feeling even better about getting Prime now. It seems like we order stuff almost daily now instead of running to the store. We've more than paid back the $75 in free shipping less than halfway into the 12 month cycle.
