But - it's very incorrect, I don't agree that it enhances readability - and moreover it makes my blood boil. Google fails me for finding a citation, but apparently the precedent was set by cigarette advertising (for say, 25's).

I think I speak for every UK limited company contractor when I say "Shit." Thanks for the heads-up, I imagine this will have a lot of impact on a lot of UK people here.

Learn something useful -> Learn Scala or Erlang on the side. P. T. Barnum just turned in his grave! He said USEFUL! If you said "learn to write SQL instead of abstracting stuff through a framework" or even "learn to mix cement and lay

This is going to be a PR disaster for apple, from a developers point of view. He may have been asked to pull the blog post until they get time to talk to him about it.

Collectively, HN posters and commenters seem to 90% get it. Unbelievable for a website like this. Reddit runs at about 50% Metafilter runs at about 40% Digg at 5%

Crikey - I thought Google of all places wouldn't stuff up the user-agent bot webpage. Google's user-agent is: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Googlebot/2.1; + http://www.google.com/bot.html I mean, everyone has heard of Google - but it's very bad

I hate Word. I needed to print 300 address labels last night. I tried outputting HTML in a table (evil), then I tried reportlab (more evil). I ended up outputting them as csv and importing them into Excel and doing a mail-merge with Word.

MMS is sort-of solving a 10 year old problem - and it's a 10 or so year old telco answer to the problem of "how do we extract money from customers and lock them in?". It's on the way out, too, being supplanted by email. There's a lot of die

For me, IE6 being the "corporate standard" is just more evidence of corporate IT departments slowly slipping into irrelevancy. The last two contracts I've done have been what I (tongue-in-cheek) call guerilla contracts, where I've been buil

Come and visit the UK, where you can get a free laptop with virtually any 12-month mobile broadband commitment. I think Orange did a promo with free laptops on ADSL a while back, too. [edited to cite...] http://www.carphonewarehouse.com (

I've just spent some quality time with Cappuccino - and it's not hyperbole - it's that good. I'm much more enamored of the 100% javascript approach than Sproutcore's impedance mismatching between client, server and intermediate "compiler".

I think its a nice combination of carefully stirring interest without overhyping expectations - and exactly the right amount of humor (a tiny bit!) Well written. I was most impressed with the flash question - that's the best way to find a f

Possibly - but I think you're overestimating the reach that techcrunch has (even within the technical sphere), and the need for publicity that Intel has. Moreover, even if TC sold one of these to every reader and two of their friends, that'

Yeah, I have actually. That was 32 years ago, when you could etch boards at home and mount thru-hole DIP components in your shed. No idea if Woz etched the boards himself, but ferric chloride was always cheaper than LSD. Sorry, but comput

Nice work. Of course I can't tell the difference, because all that anyone's seen is a photo of your prototype. I think I made a fair assumption. Thanks for weighing in with a comment though, and as I said before, please do prove me wrong!

Browsing the comments on TC, and I found this quite telling/interesting. http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/08/30/update-on-the-techcrunc... In case it goes: "A couple of weeks ago I was asked to make a simple cad model for the prototype hard

The screen? It's Arrington's old macbook air screen. http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/08/19/apple-is-flailing-badly... Quote: "That $1,800 piece of hardware has now been dismantled for parts for a project we’re working on here."

That's a fair synopsis of my response, yes! The very fact that they have built a prototype already means they're doin' it wrong. The correct approach when you fly in with a set of specs (which seemed to be $200, touch screen, browser) is t

And that is exactly my point. It's one thing to build a prototype, and another thing entirely to be able to mass produce a web tablet for $200. And no matter how good the EE, you can't do that stuff at a messy kitchen table - you need ser

Classy. Do these guys really think you can brew up a $200 web tablet at an old kitchen table? I've been critical of this project before, but my advice on the matter would be to refer techcrunch to the first facet of this effect: http://en

Don't know if PG has released browser stats for HN - but my guess is that Safari and Firefox on OS X would be fairly well represented. Everyone likes news about their tools - ever seen a mechanics shop when the snap-on van pulls in?
