Unfortunately there seem to be scalability issues with Bitcoin. Currently each node needs to know about every transaction that ever happened. The size of my .bitcoin directory is currently around 100 MB. So with more users the high amount o

The interesting question is if all those domains belong to US citizens. If the US only seizes domains of their own citizens that's somewhat OK for me. If the US also sizes domains of other nation's citizens I guess in the future I'll only u

In almost all countries (where appliable) these laws only apply to "public" speach. If you're just mailing a friend you can write there whatsoever. So there is no reason to censor messages themselves.

IMO there is neither lack of hosting support (just use EC2 or a vserver) nor any serious performance issues. I'm a long term Python developer (since the 1.5.2 days). I've used a lot of different languages so far (from C to Haskell), and I'v

Yes - this should work. There are even other ways how you might be able to exploit this. I don't exactly know how Dropbox verifies if your file is already on the server. But if they only check a hash of the file it might be sufficient to kn

Even less space is required. Dropbox stores duplicate files only once. So if many users store the same files the cost per user is practically zero. That's also the reason why uploads are so fast. If a file is already on the server it isn't

Try Wuala or SpiderOak if you want a similar service that features client-side encryption (so the company offering the service can't read your data).

I love Dropbox from a usability point of view, but unfortunately the missing encryption is the main reason why it's not an option for me right now. I'd like to also be able to backup sensitive data, but I don't trust the Dropbox employees w

Not a good idea if you know that you're targeted by the government. ;) In fact this makes it much easier for them to get access to your data. If they know your name they can get to your credit card transactions. From you're credit card tran

This should not be a problem in the status.net case, where users are assigned subdomains (username.status.net). Just get a wildcard certificate for *.status.net.

As far as I know the expensive part is not the transmission of data (which is done via AES and extremely cheap), but the establishment of the SSL connection using public key cryptography. Even though this only needs to be done once for each

In many European countries (I don't know about other countries) there's not so much different between these two options. In fact, in Austria it's even easier to cancel a charge to your normal bank account (which you can do without giving an
