Unless they have a loop indicator in the file it's not a GIF replacement.

I don't think this should be solved with tags (or other OOB methods). Just set a "loop" flag in the container (or metadata). GIF is perfect because it doesn't require ANY additional info when it comes to looping or anima

I know. But I spoke of devices that can actually use telephony. Not VoIP, that was possible all the time. This for example: https://github.com/bg111/asterisk-chan-dongle/

Depending on ISP and country this can never be achived. Sometimes there are laws to filter out specific domains. But then again, should the browser be the authority to decide that? I think not.

No, as everyone (including your ISP) can setup a DoH/DoT server. What is a problem though is a lack of discoverability. Right now you need to manually configure DoT/DoH. Or you are Mozilla and force the decision.

No it doesn't. Having HTTP does not magically open the server.

Like in past days. If you have a working OS (ie not iOS) you can use it fine. Otherwise use Lounge or something similar.

The normal "solution" (ie what I do) for this would be using an ESP8266/32, it has 3 UARTs and I think you can bitbang some more.

There is no need to evolve when your protocol is fine to begin with. Always-on can fly. Blame Apple for shitting on that idea.
