Good artists copy. Great artists steal. — Steve Jobs, quoting Pablo Picasso. Picasso never said that, or most of the things people say he said. The quote is a paraphrase of T.S. Eliot. (Lots of discussion of this previously on HN.) Anothe

The article is considerably better than the comments here imply. In my view, the OP is showing intelligent intuition about software. I've encountered the exact same issues that they have. It's frustrating when code wrapped up in a

One place the criticisms here are bordering on unfair is in mentioning the study's assumptions without mentioning how they're based on previous work. For example, the use of fancy cars as a proxy for higher social status, or the u

That's not a particularly critical analysis. He's not arguing that the experiments were bad, but that their findings should be interpreted carefully and in the light of the literature as a whole.

I'm not a fan of Morozov either, but this piece is not worse than his usual. First, it's a review of two books by other people. Second, the examples he picks are not extreme, they're rather typical. Third, his critique in thi

HN has always featured sciencey articles from the popular press (as well as complaints about the decline of HN, for that matter), so your claim is at first glance untrue. It does seem testable, though. Do you have any data to support it?

It's a distinct style of C that evolved over decades for implementing APLs. It's more akin to an embedded DSL than it is to normal systems code, and the reason people use it is not that it's obscure but that it fits the probl

Chomsky would never describe himself as anti-American. He's a critic of power structures. His focus is on U.S. power structures because (a) they're the most impactful and (b) in the classic prophetic/dissident tradition, he b

I wonder how much the massive adoption of zero tolerance policies has to do with the name "zero tolerance" itself. It sounds indisputable. Why should we tolerate things like weapons or drugs in schools? Those things are bad. If yo

It's quite true. There are lots of examples here and many more on Twitter. I suspect the reason is that once something has reached a certain popularity, it becomes more of a status move to identify against it than with it.
