This seems like a terrible idea for anyone. I own a decently sized house in a major city. It's about 100 years old but in above average condition. It still requires considerable time and maintenence. Fortunately I have water, gas, elec

The HN title says something different than the blog post title / intent. The HN title is incorrect and misleading imo. The blog post can be summarized as "you don't need indexes on tiny tables".

You're pretty wrong. No organization can just spin up large international companies. I don't know where you'd get such an idea from. Even the technical parts of Uber alone would take years to replicate. The app frontend? Sure

Well, if we're getting into semantics we could maybe say cooked vs prepared, I'm not sure. There's obvious physical differences between burnt onions and caramelized onions. Similarly, there's obvious physical difference

We have two tables at nearly 2 billion rows for line items on invoices (we aggregate data for a substantial portion of a major industry). We have ~20 tables that are over 100 million rows but less than 1 billion. Looks like another ~20 tabl

You can safely go to a billion rows. Use indexes. Don't do silly things like count(*) or select *, select the small data sets you need using your indexes. If you need a full table count for some reason, use a primary key that auto incr

You could say the same about any professional. You do it because it's the right thing to do, and if you don't do it, people are more likely not to work for you in the future.
