The flip side of this is control. If s3 goes down, and therefore your service is down, there's little you can do about it whilst your customers are screaming at you.

How can the new API know this? You've got an old app that uses an API that assumes full access to the device. A new API that restricts that access _cannot_ just guess what the app actually needs / uses - the only sane thing to do

The nice thing about society is that it allows people to come together and pool their resources, in order to achieve an expensive thing that no individual might be able to reasonably afford. I get that nice things that you want are sometime

Maybe that's true, but this isn't a problem with open source. There's lots of popular proprietary software.

You specific having the time/resources is not the point. The point is that for users with the resources, they have the freedom to do this (either themselves or by hiring someone). "I don't have the resources to exercise my fr

"most important" is entirely subjective. I'd rather "parts truly open and parts proprietary", than "whole not open but pretending to be".

The latter. Same is true of all business dependencies, not just OSS ones. It's a large reason why a lot of companies do M&A - it minimizes the risks of not having control over that dependency.

This has nothing to do with OSS developers being compensated, it's about risk management for the consumer. If you build your business on something that might disappear because someone decides to suddenly stop working on it, it's r

Hard to take seriously any suggestion which look at ARP (and the other warts in v4) and goes "yep, let's hang onto those". "Let's make a new, backwards incompatible protocol and not learn anything from the old one&q

There's nothing about regulated environments or commercial apps that limit your choice to "systemd on Linux". Everything is a tradeoff.

Again, the existence of DoH has zero bearing on whether or not software written by someone else chooses to use the OS networking stack or even respect your desires when it comes to name resolution.

An antagonistic device on your network that wants to resolve names doesn't need to use DNS at all. DoH isn't "magic". It's just a simple, standardised protocol. It's existence makes it no more or less easy for

Your original assertion "signal knows who is talking to whom" does not follow from "Signal relays the data".

How does it follow that Signal knowing a phone number means they know who the identity that phone number represents is communicating with?

I had lasagna in Sri Lanka once and had an similar experience. Looked like it, tasted nothing like it. It's like the only thing they had to go on was a picture of what lasagna looks like.

Is this unique to certain genres? Everyone in the UK knows about "Chinese takeaway chips" and "Indian Omlettes", but you don't see such concessions in Thai, Italian, French etc. places.

If you use a database library that does mmap to create a db file with SC_PAGE_SIZE (4KB) pages, and then upgrade your device to a 16KB one and backup/restore the app, now your data isn't readable.
