Oh dear, you're a very vituperative fellow. I don't expect you to read it at all. I couldn't give a tinker's cuss if you do or don't. Generally though, if you don't want to look like a fool, it's best no

Well - that's certainly the most charming jibe I've received about my writing. I tip my hat to you sir. I would be keen to know your opinion after reading the whole article. I assume you haven't - because I do at least make

Well - I wasn't advocating that it should be entirely dismantled as a discipline. But I do believe it should be avoided by those with the sort of personality that would seek to make up for its flaws with their egotism. That's wh

I presume the 'you' in your statement is directed at... well... who exactly? Who was promoting Bitcoin in a way that did not foreground its extreme risk front and center? Your journalistic finger wagging will not do here. I woul

Well - I think it's important to address the tone. I was going to say more about the substantive argument - but didn't because I didn't want to write a wall of text. Also, I just see the argument as a very uncritical regurg

The tone of condescension that comes from professional economists is telling. It's impossible for them to just present their arguments, cleanly, simply and without ostentation and vitriol. They have to try to make you feel stupid for

You got my upvote. I can't understand the point of view expressed in this article at all. I particularly can't understand the claim that the accessibility hasn't improved. Yesterday I implemented a couple of different machi

Advice question - how far into the linear algebra should I go? I'm currently working my way through a book - and it's not too bad, but I really don't want to invest more than I really need. Any suggestions?

This is unnecessarily snarky. Sure, there is probably a status element in the declaration - but it also confers authority to their claims, whether you like it or not. This is handy for folks skimming comments to look for quality contribut

Folks make this statement: "but a currency must have backing, or intrinsic value" and feel that they have just proved bitcoin can't work. But not many contributors seem capable of stating WHY they believe this. Care to ela

Well - I'm not sure I'm as pessimistic as that... But look - if your default position on a topic is X, and it happens to be the case that there is no rational way to explain why you are wrong about X, then you can hardly be blamed

This comment sounds flippant - but it has some truth... I've had a lot of experience with many academics from many different disciplines, from science to media studies, to philosophy. The sense in which they are 'making out like

The quality of a course really depends on who is running it and how enthusiastic they are. So I would recommend keeping an open mind about coursera until you've taken a few different courses. Also depends on the students that take it.

Very good point - but at least it won't be as easy for them to do it. These NSA activities require the co-operation and silence of a lot of different entities - and that would be much harder to obtain if they don't have legal sta

Look - some people don't want to bring down anything. They just want a more efficient, cheaper means of exchange and a more reliable store of wealth. Besides that - when it comes to effects of such a currency on geo-politics... <cue s

Think bigger. Since it's easy to leave the glasses on - and assuming large amounts of bandwidth - everyone uploads their video of the concert to the cloud, from which the algos piece together a high resolution 3d composite which gets strea

Bitcoin hasn't yet proved it can do either 1 or 2 yet. If it succeeds in either it will do better than gold is currently doing as currency. But I wasn't trying to measure currency dick size. I was just making the point that not being good
