Run multiple replicas with synchronous replication. For Postgres see: https://wiki.postgresql.org/wiki/Synchronous_replication This way you should be able to tolerate failure of a single instance without losing data.

Packages are great because they simplify automation. Once you've got a package built and uploaded to a repository, you can install it across a large fleet of machines one-line of Chef or Puppet code. There are some pitfalls, however: *

Great! My experience has been that packages simplify automation and play nicely with DevOps tools like Puppet and Chef. It's dead simple to write a recipe to install a package, whereas things get complicated quickly when you try to wri

Another tip: IAM roles for EC2 instances. http://aws.typepad.com/aws/2012/06/iam-roles-for-ec2-instanc... Basically, the apps you run on EC2 often need to access other AWS services. So you need to get AWS cre

Really, there's no such thing as "optimal" because no one has a crystal ball. A portfolio of 100% VTI is indeed diverse, tax-efficient, and has low expenses. Personally, I'd add some amount of VXUS (international stocks)

EC2 spot instances can provide significant cost savings if your app can cope with them getting killed unexpectedly. To help decide what to bid, I made a small app that continuously collects and graphs historical spot prices: http:/&#x

Nice! I really like postgres-based queues. Another one is https://github.com/ryandotsmith/queue_classic It uses LISTEN/NOTIFY. It might be interesting to compare it to que in the README.

Yes, spot instances are significantly cheaper than even reserved instances. For example, a 3-year heavy utilization cc2.8xlarge instance costs $0.49/hr (with $10K up-front!), whereas its costs only $0.27/hr on the spot market (wit

One approach is stubbing out the services you don't need. This article by a Heroku engineer describes how to do this at the Rack level: https://brandur.org/service-stubs Another approach is creating a set of shared ser

I'm also seeing this on a 512MB DigitalOcean server. From previous experience, I'm pretty sure the problem is that when you compile with Go 1.1 your program's VM commit charge is much larger (~500M) than it was with Go 1.0 (~

Agreed. The Postgres "with" statement is also a great way to make large queries readable: http://www.postgresql.org/docs/9.2/static/queries-with.html I first saw this demonstrated in Peter van Harde

False dichotomy---bundling dependencies doesn't preclude integrating well with the host system. See Basho's latest Riak package for Ubuntu 12.04: http://s3.amazonaws.com/downloads.basho.com/riak/1.3/

For me the main reason is consistency. I can write apps in Python, Ruby, node, etc. and configure them all the same way. The envdir program (from daemontools) is useful for setting environment variables in a shell-agnostic way, e.g., run yo
