This is a simple example, but usually you have command line arguments, the output can be large, and you might have input to process. As soon as you have that, you arrive at a more complex API, but one where you don't shoot yourself in

As an alternative to page counts, we used HLLs to estimate (unique) cardinality, and were quite happy with it. There is a postgres extension (postgresql-hll) and also a version for the JVM using the same algorithm/data format.

I'm probably just misunderstanding, but a calendar like Google Calendar definitely needs to store time with a time zone (i.e. dates with a time component). This allows to keep a scheduled event at 9 AM, even if the time zone offset is

A side note on the last part: @cert-authority is an underrated feature of OpenSSH. More companies should use it to make their infrastructure safer to use.

I'm happy that I found this subthread here, which in a sea of comments talks about the really relevant point: Signal's goal is not to provide the most secure communication channel ever to targeted individuals. It's to mitigat

I know there are potentially lots of other confounding variables (like socioeconomic status), but would that kind of correlation not support the thesis? I know that me and my friends did much fewer stupid things as soon as we got a computer

Here is how this works: https://www.link-assistant.com/news/keyword-refinements.html Basically, Google tries to anticipate query refinements, improving the search as a skilled user would do. Most users are not skilled

I mean that agnosticism operates on a different level, kind of like a syntax error in an expression versus that expression being false.

Agnosticism is "This claim is untestable and therefore not scientific. I don't accept that claim, not just based on the (lack of) evidence presented so far, but because I reject it's underlying question."

There is a difference between rejecting a claim and not accepting a claim, yet you use both expressions to describe the position of an atheist. Which one is it?

If you mess up quoting, a lot of things break when you're presented with "funny" input. If you get quoting right, you stop worrying about the things OP mentions. Instead of limiting the input creating more mess and a new set

We've used a monolithic microservice architecture before and were happy enough about it. The application was basically structured in microservices, but developed in a single project (monorepo and all) and the build produced a single bu

The great thing about a reproducible build system and a large enough userbase is that it blurrs the line between a compile-from-source distro like Gentoo and a binary distro. This could be huge: flexibility when needed, and convenience ever
