I used Bloglines for a long time, and finally switched away a year or two ago after the lack of innovation and some frustrating problems got to me. It's sad that Google is the only real game in town when it comes to web-based RSS readers -

My respect for how hard it is to convert from .pdf to HTML just went waaaay up. Scribd must have really thought displaying in HTML5 was worth a lot of trouble if they went to all this effort to be precise!

An ETF is an Early Termination Fee, which you have to pay if you leave your contract early. It protects the carriers since they're subsidizing your phone.

Very good news for WebOS since HP doesn't have their own competing mobile OS.

Interesting, but I'm doubtful that the Justice Department or FCC are going to regulate an ad network that only runs on a particular (albeit a very popular) kind of phone.

As someone whose written a few WebOS apps, this shows great promise - building UIs is much easier than doing it by hand. Looking forward to trying it at home where I have the emulator installed!

I'm guessing the submitter is making a suggestion to deal with the _why/Zed Shaw articles.

Honestly, this is no big surprise. I can definitely see the benefit for Palm providing syncing support, but if they thought it was going to last very long they were only fooling themselves.

I wrote an extension similar to this at http://gregstoll.dyndns.org/~gregstoll/passwordhash/ but for some reason I'm hesitant about changing over to this scheme.

Wow - I just started playing with R a few weeks ago and this is a great resource. Browsing for a neat-looking graph and being able to see the source is awesome!

It seems like you should be able to quantify defense by keeping track of the points scored by the guy you're covering... Glad to see my hometown team developing new basketball statistics :-)

Or just do everything twice - if it really runs seven times faster than "today's best technology" than it shouldn't be an issue. It's a very interesting idea...wish they had more details in the article.

Very neat - I like the "Commands using <whatever>" feature. The "Popular functions" box on the right has some command names running together ("perl" and "ping", "uname" and "uniq") for me on Firefox 3.1b2 on Windows.

The Firefox equivalent is Flashblock ( https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433 ) which I can't live without!

My good zones are 2-5pm and 9-11pm. I try to fill the other parts of the work day with administrative stuff or studying existing code, when possible.

Ah, tracked down the problem - it was related to a last minute URL change I made. It should work now, sorry!

OK - now zip should function as a postcode as well. (characters permitted, up to length 10)

I tried to distinguish by adding good tag and filtering capabilities, eg. looking for a place that serves asian food that takes less than 10 minutes.

That's the problem - all the restaurants on the site were entered manually by me (and my friends). Taking a quick look at the Yelp API TOS, it looks like you might be able to use their data. (but of course I'm not a lawyer)

Sorry about that! Good, clear domain names are a little hard to come by. I probably should have thought of a more clever name...

Yeah, the big problem is where to pull data from legally. I'm definitely open to suggestions! Went ahead and added NYC as a city.

I went ahead and added a location for Cambridge - let me know if you're able to add locations or not, since I haven't tested the geocoding in the UK...

Thanks! I'll see what I can do - sadly the database schema is somewhat tied to the US right now, but as long as Google or Yahoo geocoding works over there it shouldn't be too bad...
