Im pretty sure if that were a common situation more people would have rooftop solar and there wouldn’t need to be subsidies for it.

He said “cost inefficient” which i would interpret as meaning “expensive”. I think it’s pretty plausible that a single nat gas or coal plant would be a cheaper way of generating a fixed amount of electricity than solar + enough batteries to

So your saying natural gas + solar is cheaper than natural gas alone? Could you provide a source for that? That would be a great thing to know. Thanks

This type of fuel basically cant melt so with no helium it would just heat up and natural convection would cool it.

What has the EPA done to reduce carbon dioxide emissions that will change as a result of this? I thought the US didn’t have any kind of cap and trade or carbon tax

The business model apple is proposing should be ruled anticompetitive. The cost of maintaining the iOS platform should be covered by the cost of selling the hardware. Apple trying to lock out side-loading and third party app stores and paym

You have quite a few wrong statements in your reply! The french nuclear fleet rolled out mostly in the 1980’s not the “late 70’s” but that’s unimportant. The main issue with your statement the “solar+batteries” doesnt include enough batteri

I dont follow this: >you're also generating more PV on the cloudy days Or this: >chance of a failure mode drops much faster than linearly

>60 hours of battery bank With that little battery you’re going to need to keep some natural gas plants running to be able to survive a few cloudy days in a row without a blackout.

Ive heard people claim that but the only example of decarbonizing to actually ever happen is France with nuclear and that was not particularly expensive (and happened 30 years ago)

LNT has never been established and probably never will be. It is still used in some contexts for conservative safety analysis. Places with multiple times typical background activity do not have measurably higher cancer rates.

https://web.stanford.edu/group/efmh/jacobson/Articles/I/143W... This paper doesn’t really attempt to compare a 100% nuclear grid to a 100% renewable grid. It defines a Business as Usual (BAU) energy

The total system cost of meeting electrical demand using 100% wind and solar is many times higher than the total system cost of meeting that demand with nuclear. The fact that you can produce lots of electricity cheaply using wind and solar
