I took foreign language courses in high school and college. I couldn't actually communicate until moving to the country where they spoke it and living there for six months. Then I had to go back home :(

SpaceX doesn't seem super interested in science, like you know probes 'n stuff. I would say that NASA was never super interested in reducing the cost to access space though. They complement each other very well.

Your literal blackout analogy falls apart pretty quickly when you consider that this story lives in the attention economy, a seething ocean of information all vying for our eyeballs. It's more like there's a town (with power) and

It's more a question about the visibility of information, and HN increases visibility. HN originating content is irrelevant. News about Assange is niche, that niche is here. Lack of mainstream reporting might not be a vast conspiracy.

But is it a blackout if it gets to the front page of HN?

The last building I lived in was reinforced concrete. It was great, I definitely couldn't hear the neighbors, except I could still hear the people upstairs walking around in what sounded like tap shoes at 2am on Saturday nights. Some p

unique_ptr is a conspiracy, man. You see, the people who make money off of mallocs (those corrupt DRAM manufacturers) want it to stay that way. Just follow the money.

Yes but what is your profiler is a piece of crap, and the innovation is to modify it to suit your needs better? And, you take that engineer out to lunch who knows the most about it and pick their brains and come up with ideas.

Lunchtime with colleagues is always the best for making silly ideas workable. If anything, the open office plan discourages conversation because shhhh some people are actually trying to get work done.

Consider the meaning of necessary vs. sufficient conditions. You're confusing the two.

You're forgetting coordinating at scale, and giant piles of money for parallelization of the building the manufacturing infrastructure. You think regulation was holding us back? How about the infrastructure to make the vaccines?

It has become more political in the past year I've noticed. Oh well. And the same arguments over and over and over and over.

I would voluntarily pay higher taxes for more services. How else would you purpose large infrastructure projects to be handled? It's precisely scale that's needed to get good ROI. Look up the word monopsony. Also consider the wor

I mean, it was war. Conventions are nice, but my read on both world wars nobody actually cared, they just practiced tit for tat. The comment I was responding to made what I interpreted as a false equivalence.

You only get that multiple if you're publicly listed. Usually for M&A the price is discounted from that, but this also varies widely by industry. Never do a hardware startup, for instance :)

Probabalistic failure analysis is certainly something engineers do for determining system risk, else how do you determine how many redundant components to include? I seems like having a higher safety factor just means having a lower probabi
