Do you honestly need a theory to tell you that all animals like to procreate and a lot of what they do is motivated by this goal? If there is something I'm missing let me know but I'm pretty sure that sums it up. I guess the great success o

Never understood evolutionary psychology and for that matter any kind of psychological or evolutionary theory because all such theories explain things post facto and don't have any predictive power. It is easy to cook up a theory to explain

Ha! He makes some good points but he is way wrong about math and econ classes being better than business classes. It is the same bullshit. Professors are never right for the job they are doing especially in introductory courses designed to

The first time I read "1984" was during the "smoking gun" talks that congress was having about Iraq. I was amazed that in a classroom of thirty people I was the only one that was drawing the parallels between the novel and the then current

I don't think this data set in complete in that sense since only public profiles can be crawled in this way. At least that's what I gathered from the article.

Why is this kind of data ever going to be useful? People have 200+ friends on their friends lists but only a handful of those are meaningful and the rest of those links are just about facebook values in the same way that capitalism is about

The same critique applies to all the disciplines that are currently taught at the undergraduate level in all universities and the part about smart students becoming cynical especially rings true.

Not much to do with being a poor student or going to class. I've noticed that some professors don't get frustrated when students ask questions and others get frustrated right away. The ones that are easily frustrated are usually the asshole

I don't think it's only an American phenomena. Your example is only about the lowest common denominator of what happens in America but the main thesis of the article seems to work in any setting. The self-centered, narcissistic male usually

I should have been more clear. I think private research oriented institutions where most of the money comes from research proposals don't have many good teachers. It's especially bad at private schools because almost no money comes from the

I like the very first one about teacher hostility and arrogance because it is completely true. Out of 10 random professors there may be 1 that's not an asshole.

I'm not sure I get what kind of psychological theory the article is describing. "Things that are easy to understand are perceived as better than hard to understand things unless you're in some kind of mood that makes the opposite true." How

I don't think a blanket exercise regimen of more is the way to go. I feel miserable when I exercise more than 5 times a week because it takes me at least one day to recover so piling on more exercise just keeps me in a constant state of rec

Any time there are ideological stakes and interests there are bound to be "evil" plans to preserve them. In the end it's going to be consumer choice and as long as Apple keeps their customers comfortably numb I don't think they are going to
