Brilliant. About a five year payback period, similar to a larger rooftop setup. I look forward to a future where every outdoor surface is made of solar panels .

I didn’t say anything about simplifying the tax code, I said NZ ease of filing is something to aspire to.

For a generation or two “recall” meant “take it in for an important fix”. If I have to take it in and be without my vehicle for x hours or days that is much more disruptive to my life and makes the vehicle less useful. When it updates overn

> A 5kW solar system is about $25k to 35k in my area before batteries. Do you live on the moon? Earlier this year I installed a 7.8kW system in Canada for $13k CAD all in, inc the inverter and labor. (Then I got a $5k subsidy to bring

It is something to aspire to, something to aim for. Once you know it has been done, then you know it’s possible. The US has vastly more resources to draw on than NZ, and benefits from economies of scale. The goal is constant improvement, no

You should look at how other countries do professional sports. The teams are not franchises, they can not simply "buy" whatever players they want, etc.

After working for a few years as a software engineer I just didn’t want to sit inside for my life. So I saved for two years, then quit and spent two years driving from Alaska to Argentina. Hiking, camping, exploring. Basically doing whateve

Sorry I wasn’t more clear. When it is sunny I go hiking. When it is snowing I go snowboarding. When the fall colours are out I go mountain biking. Then when it’s dark I write articles about that stuff, working the least amount possible.

> It has a terrible potential to corrupt sport That ship sailed a looping time ago. Sports teams in the US are franchises. Like McDonalds. They exist to make profit. Lots of it. It has nothing to do with sport.

Hitchhiking to Alaska is very cheap. In fact driving a 4x4 from Alaska to Argentina only cost me the same as it did to live in a city and go to work everyday ~$1200 per month for everything

Along similar lines, I never really pictured what being a software engineer would be like. I like solving problems and working with smart people, but sitting inside all day at a computer just isn’t for me. Sunny outside? Sit inside all day.

So it seems like the magic here is the "patcher". I'm looking at the repo [1], but it doesn't give any technical details on the what/how of what it does. Does anyone know more? [1] https://git.sr.ht/

My last company offered me a “promotion” that included more accountability, mentoring young staff and on-call with zero clarity of what that looked like. Zero compensation change. Needless to say I declined and left soon after.
