I sequences my genome about 10 year's ago using illumina platform for ~1200AUD. We used a university sequencing facility. They were happy to extract and sequence the dna using a shotgun approach. Depth was 5x and I think we achieved ab

The article author probably bought the starter kit a while ago. It might explain why the pore count was low. It's a biological product so it degrades over time.

The thermocycler replacement using an electric kettle is hilarious. Thats how old school dna amplification would happen before the invention of thermocyclers. OP you'd get better results of you centrifuge your blood, extract the white

My personal experience from within medical research area is that its a combination of Matthew + Ortega. Lab heads bring in the money for the army of mediocre phd and junior scientists who eventually leave the field for a variety of reasons.

This can backfire. eg Twitch moderators. Discretion should be rarely used. For everything else, create a set of rules and stick to them.

My personal opinion is that BM is a weird world and I don't know how it can be standardized and taught in a formal setting. It is domain specific and sometimes even company specific. How such a thing can be standardised and formally ta

I'm glad it's not just me! The System Preferences is terrible, the search doesn't work well, and it's really hard to find what you need without having to go into another subwindow.

Great article. I'd love to read the work you mention here if it exists: > I read a work of great insight on the corrosive effect of irony on American culture, critiquing it as a kind of anesthesia poisoning the pop cultural artifact

Librecalc is fine and I would argue most people don't use the arcs advanced features of MS Excel. The reason it's incompatible with MS Office is because MS doesn't use a consistent standard or the iso standard. Theyve done th

It sounds like you haven't lived in the tropics. The heat exerts a different force than cold winters. Sure there's plenty of water and food (if you can find it), but where and how you sleep matters. For example in a rain forest yo

Suggesting ONT is like suggesting getting a cpu without mentioning everything else that's required. Even then, you'll need expertise in analysing the output reads. And EVEN then it's difficult to accurately assess variants.

I think this exact reason why MS will fight to the death to keep Office off Linux machines. It's the last hurdle before 'normies' moving to Linux.

While I agree it's sad that a many scientific companies are jumping on the LLM hype train, there are many researchers producing fantastic work with and without the aid of LLMs. Some are incorporating llms in a nice way, eg integrating

Pen and paper is back up in case of extreme events, and not because the software crashed or a bad patch was applied. Millions on software with no software redundancy built in is insane in the medical field.

It's still an issue. I've heard stories of EMR system going down forcing staff to use pen and paper. It boggles my mind that such systems don't have redundancy. These are commercial products being deployed.

Id argue that the average user is not a good barometer. They are okay with slowly being boiled alive. See windows 11 as a good example. What's being sacrificed in the name of security is not worth it imo. Enabling side loading on andro

The two last issues facing users switching are (imo) battery management and track pads. I know there are solutions but they're very complicated to setup properly for the average user.

Thanks for the correction! I might be conflating rmarkdown with knitr because the developer of knitr (who was employed on some capacity by Posit) was let go. For how long do you think Posit will continue to support both platforms?
