I've always wanted to get one of those big exercise balls to replace my general issue office chair, but a desk that I could stand at would be nice, too.

The quote on that post mentions pg as an Emacs users, but he's used vim for years.

I think he took out "www." It's probably possible to do something similar with superfluous POST variables. Perhaps someone could improve the URL matching algorithm?

The rationale being that HN wants to reward the websites that hackers find useful or meaningful and not give free linking to spam?

And it's not like nobody's using it. The Pidgin developers are using it. Side note: http://www.monotone.ca lists Git/Cogito as an alternative, but not plain Git.

Linus Torvalds actually said Git was probably a bad idea for doing the home directory thing, but that hasn't stopped people from trying. I'd be interested to hear more first-hand stories from other hackers doing the same thing.

At least he gathered some new quotes and anecdotal evidence. I particularly like the "two-pizza" reference.

What do you mean? There's the Pontiac car. And Mozilla temporarily used the name for the Phoenix/Firebird/Firefox project but changed because the database was already using the name.

I'm not sure why, but we (people) generally sleep better in cool air and warm blankets. Having a cold pillow facilitates this. Another good reason to turn down the thermostat and/or use a fan at night!

Best 'open' tip, use '-a' to specify the application, even without a file or location (e.g. 'open -a Firefox').

I work at a research university/hospital and manage my own servers for my department. Each server runs Debian or Ubuntu, Apache, MySQL. I can't imagine not being able to admin my own servers. That's part of what being a hacker is all abou

Not so much a social network for programmers, but programmer collaboration. Also, GitHub doesn't have the project management tools SourceForge has for things like tickets.

Excellent use of App Engine. But it makes me wonder why Google hasn't done this on their own yet. Maybe because they're trying to re-create every possible web app so you don't need to login to anything but Google?
