I'm pretty happy that they didn't, because silently replacing one operation with a similar operation that inevitably has different bugs and different ways of handling edge cases would be pretty frustrating. Letting both live side-

It is particularly infuriating in R, because lm(y ~ ., data = my_dataframe) already means "regress the variable y on all other columns in `my_dataframe`." For big, interactive regresions, it's really natural to write

I've thought about this a lot, and the easiest rule of thumb is, "buy something consumable." Like chocolate, notebooks, wine, etc., that's one or two steps nicer than they'd buy for themselves. (Or than you'd b

It is a kind of backwards reasoning that students empirically screw up all the time. Edit: so much so, that I would definitely recommend students rewrite these proofs on assignments as an exerecise to make sure it's correct. By the tim

I sort of agree, but your advice is targeted at an entirely different group of students than the article's. If someone is confused about how to interpret sin^2(x) vs sin^{-1}(x), there's no amount of "understanding" that

Those upper division math classes are pretty painful regardless. The material is just innately hard in a way that's dissimilar to most other hard things.

If your budgeting process relies critically on the number of characters being a good proxy for the value of a service, I don’t think acronyms are the problem. :)

Yes, 100%. In the parent's example the system should be fixed so that no one can push directly to prod. Failing that, some sort of standardized checklist/process should be put in place. That's true regardless of who personall

That's most of the reason for the first item: "don't ask for a job, or approach these conversations with the goal of getting a particular job." Many people, introverts included, would want to be approached by someone g

You're not alone, but I also think that (like most of us) you're setting the bar higher than it actually is for what a "network" means. You posted a question on HN and look at how many people are willing to put effort in
