There are algorithms to add variables and observations to an estimated linear regression model, so scaling is not an advantage of gradient descent. You should mention in the post that there are better ways to estimate this model, even if yo

Companies already can choose to interview anyone who's taken relevant coursework, but usually can't commit that much time so they screen applicants first. If the grades in a few particular online courses become widely known for ge

It would be fun if the general solution was making online classes absurdly hard . Unfortunately, it's hard enough to stop cheating on exams in physical lecture halls, so once a high grade guarantees students job interviews....

Two thoughts: 1) this is a somewhat bizarre exercise. It seems like it's more relevant to work out the probability that the better team wins, for empirically relevant values of what the author's calling "expectation value&quo

It somehow hits me as cutesy and "not serious." (can't think of a more specific way of putting that, sorry.) Nothing wrong with that if that's where you're going, but isn't what I'd think of as "opini

I've used TeX with eplain and for many purposes it's great, but publishers and coauthors essentially mandate LaTeX for real papers. Pollen is intriguing[1,2], but way too early to say anything about. If TeX or LaTeX are going to b

It gets better... Well, LaTeX doesn't, but you'll eventually converge on a set of packages and workarounds that fit your writing. Macros are local to the environment where they're created, so you can get around a lot of cut a

I don't do this stuff, so this may be a stupid question. But it looks like you have p_A and p_B being independent in the posterior distribution. How does that work? I would assume that they're pretty correlated IRL --- we'r

There's more prefix notation in math than you think: ∑ᵢ xᵢ ∫ x² dx etc. And `A x` is more likely to be written as `(A x)` than `A(x)` in your example. I don't necessarily agree with the article, though...
