The world's avocado industry essentially comes from a single tree - the mother Hass. Apparently at a conference years back, organisers gave out bud wood from it, so there're clones spread across the world now (the original is now

From my understanding, suicide rates among indigenous Australians are similarly high, particularly in remote communities. I suspect many of the same factors are at play.

I've had a high heart rate a number of times while stationary, which sets off an alert on the Apple Watch that you may have an issue. Each time, was watching a tight rugby match and getting a little over excited. Nice to know it works

The best preparation is to make sure you have plenty of time away from work. In Australia with 'double-dipping' maternity leave, my wife had a year off and I took 6 weeks with paternity and other leave. Incredibly glad we did it

Very happy with my Dell Latitude. Has a few ports, keyboard is nice, build quality is great. Rock solid so far. One option at least.

Suspect Joe Rogan has also been a fair influence too. His podcast has a massive and varied fan base, and he's a pretty consistent promoter of the benefits of psychedelics.

Even though the Hue app isn't great, the Phillips Hue lights are something I recommend to non-tech people I know as an intro to the smart home. I have them all over my house, and they pretty much never fail to do what you expect (just

That's a fantastic idea. Just to escape from kids/work and have a good read sounds kind of magical. For some reason it seems more appealing than just going to a park or library and doing it. The socialising would be kind of rel

One suspects many Hong Kong residents would see that differently. There's been an outbreak of tensions between Chinese and Hong Kong students here in Australia. Suspect it's only going to get worse, as the University governing bo

Ban all pesticides? Every single one of them, synthetic and organic alike? That would be interesting. Pretending that biotic stresses simply don't exist is....umm..novel.

Exactly my point. A (properly designed) dsRNA only targets a single organism. It's not like an insecticide that kills everything, so is sprayed all the time. Other insects don't build up resistance, as it has no impact on them.

You're already eating dsRNA. Plants have microRNA precursors and viruses. We eat plants. Roundup is a synthetic herbicide - that they both could be used in agriculture is when the similarity ends.

Of course the future is uncertain. I don't know that if my going to work tomorrow is not going to rip a hole in the space time continuum, but I'll risk it anyway. I know that's being facetious, but the point remains. There

Provide me an example then. Organic pesticides that can be used on organically-certified farms are still poisons. White oil, soap spray etc. is all a poison if you're an insect. I don't know of any modern production system that&

Agriculture involves preferencing specific species over others. It's intellectually dishonest to think otherwise. Getting the balance right is what we should be striving for. I'd assume you take antibiotics - lot of death caus

As dsRNA is ubiquitous in nature, I would disagree. There is no equivalence with synthetic pesticides when it comes to the active ingredient. There's no new molecular structure, no genetic modification, no new protein produced. It&#x

I would disagree with passively 'letting land return to nature'. If you did this in Australia (where I'm from), and likely other places too, you'd end up with a haven for invasive species, which actively damage surround

The active ingredient is double-stranded RNA, which we all consume every day (from viruses in fruit and veges), so no issues for human health via ingestion pathway. A poorly designed dsRNA that has too much homology to a gene of a related b

I'm part of a group developing RNAi-based pesticides which are topically applied (so non-GM). They are extremely species specific; when designed properly they can avoid even close relatives of the target insect, and the by-product of t
