I think what is trying to be protected is the time of the person who designed the part. There could well be unique artistic or engineering contained in the physical design of a product, worth far more that the materials and machine time.

Pretty awesome! Arduino + BT4.0 next, please! This could (or would have in my case) been very handy for prototyping wearables. BT4.0 is better for battery usage and phone connectivity in production-ready wearables though.
