Amazingly, there is no portable way to use -i that works on both GNU and BSD sed implementations. Which means if you’re writing a portable script, you can’t use -i at all. (Would love to be proved wrong on this)

You’re right that defaulting to the GNU coreutils is probably more convenient. However, NOT doing this is a good way to ensure that any scripts you write remain portable and don’t use GNU extensions. That’s the reason I stick with the defau

Re: bat. I agree with you, I don’t get the hype over this program either. It’s pretty easy to configure 'less’ to use syntax highlighting and ‘less’ is installed basically everywhere. The main advantage of rg is how much faster it is t

Honestly one of the most well maintained projects I’ve ever used. The author has a coherent “philosophy” and vision of how the program should work and does a good job of preventing feature/scope creep. Don’t see that too often

Note that in general this is not a one-to-one replacement. `%!cmd` sends the current buffer contents to `cmd`’s stdin and replaces the buffer with `cmd`’s output. In the case of ‘ls’ this works since it doesn’t take anything on stdin

While I also find these changes to macOS alarming and disappointing, I still vastly prefer macOS to Windows. My 2013 Macbook Pro is also still the best laptop I have ever used (I also have a 2017 Macbook Pro for work and I have to admit tha

I disagree -- I think unfairness is about morality, and in many of these conversations people often conflate inequality with unfairness. A perfectly equal society can also exhibit a great deal of unfairness, and a perfectly fair society w

I use a similar setup. I'm curious what you use for msmtp for though: most Mutt setup guides I've read recommend using msmtp as well, but I've always just used Mutt's native SMTP client and it works fine, so I've ne

Note that git itself is beginning to address this exact problem by introducing new, more intuitive commands such as "restore" and "switch".

I mentioned this in another comment already, but this is what’s being done in New Mexico. The mask order was extended to, basically, “wear a mask if you’re outside your house”. This includes exercising outside. Personally, I find that part

The state of New Mexico currently mandates the use of masks while in public with the penalty of a small fine (I forget the exact amount, but it’s only a couple hundred dollars). So in practice, the former is what is already being done. And

A similar thing happened to me. All of Google's products (Search, Maps, Translate, etc.) come up for me in Dutch. The weird part is, I am not Dutch, do not speak Dutch, and have never been to the Netherlands.

This would almost certainly raise prices across the board, which would end up hurting poor people. Price targeting can be (and often is) a useful and mutually beneficial practice. Obviously it can be taken too far as we're seeing here.
