Having humans being the ones playing Universal Paperclips is a very interesting phenomenon, though. What does it say about us that as we fear a paperclip automaton annihilating us, we find it irresistable just to see some numbers get bigge

Except it has failed, twice. It’s not as though shoving it back out the door and crossing fingers isn’t potentially going to lead to more tragedy and an even worse image, plus the potential for ruinous lawsuits. Boeing is in a terrible posi

Naively it makes sense, pain is just a sensation, but suffering is more complex. I doubt that we can truly shit off sensitivity to noxious stimuli, but meditation (and maybe some generic factors) seem like a way to manage reactions to that

The people who talk about opposing mass surveillance are, on average, better educated and higher paid than the average American. When they can't bother to show up, it's noted. It’s expected, because they are a minute fraction of

Simply labeling anyone without the time to join you, or the belief that it can help as the problem is bullshit. Your premise, that if more people banded together is a false one. The ability of politicians and corporate entities to divide pe

I despise Facebook and never use it, but I don’t buy this. All of the fringe nuts, hatemongers and free speech absolutists combined are a drop in their DAU bucket. Most people don’t care if anti-vaxxers, Nazis, or the extremes of civil libe

I think “loophole” already covers the fact that this is technically legal. The issue raised in TFA is a question of whether or not this should be legal.

That’s a very good point, but of course the government is going to have to pay in some fashion for the health impacts of smoking. It’s sort of a weird situation for a government to be in, making profit from tobacco and shouldering the inevi

Well Cyprus is hot and muggy as hell in the summer, I wonder if that’s a factor? Malta is lovely and sunny, hot in the summer, and has torrential rains in fall. It’s famously hot and dry in summer, and when the rains do come they’re so brut

Very cool pictures, but a correction: Although it is understandable to see how it could be naturally assumed a vapor cone (as the singularity is also known)... This is incorrect. The P-G Singularity is a hypothesized pressure singularity

Instead of attacking the person who is making a fairly lengthy and supportable argument, and basing your stance on the notion of some nebulous value “people” find, maybe you could respond in kind? I have to say that I find myself in the cam

My immediate thought is that smoking overall is falling and falling, so maybe advertising does more than shift brand loyalty of existing customers. Smoking in the United States and other developed nations is declining, but it’s rising wor

Cars do just fine in snowy places. I don’t see a reason why bikes shouldn’t. Stability, slippage, being exposed to freezing cold and wet, the lack of an engine assist, no heat, two fewer wheels, and did I mention cold? Just throw in the
