I'm surprised about the bit about the subvocalization; I always thought that brain speed was the number one limiting factor.

I don't think gamers will be ditching desktop for laptops anytime soon (for example: better cooling allows for more performance; plus, multiple graphic cards, and, as I said previously, modularity). There still exists a difference in the hi

Interestingly, this article told me a LOT of things that I've already discovered on my own, and another few things that make me feel very relieved, since I thought that I was doing it all wrong. It seems that everyone but me is, ha! Ok, jus

My two cents. I worked for a few months in a local social network, a fairly-sized one by the way (second-only to facebook in traffic in our country). The engineers thought about the company as technology-based, and our work certainly was to

Even more: if they happened to be able to close Silk Road, or make it impractical or unusable, another similar site would rise within weeks. If they don't understand this, they simply don't understand internet. This is another example of ho

That's news to me, I'm seeing exactly the opposite: NoSQL, and especially MongoDB, seems to be the rage in my environment. I'm not as up to date as the average inhabitant of Hacker News, so I guess I'm just out of touch.

Sorry if this comes out as a little irrelevant, but I'm so glad there is someone else out there who thinks like you. I' ve already given up on proselitizing about the advantages of good ol' relational databases at my office. We DO have a sc

It's a matter of tradeoffs. Yes, agriculture had some severe disavantages, but the advantages were also huge. Without the stability that agriculture gave us, we wouldn't be what we are now.

And Matt Inman. http://theoatmeal.com/pl/senior_year/science More seriously, I can understand the power of habit, but the imperial system looks, well, pretty insane from a non-accustomed point of view.

I know it's not the same, but I've always felt something like this about math. I've been a math nerd since I was 4 or less, so there are a lot of concepts that come pretty natural to me, despite being difficult for a lot of people; I think

It's really heartwarming to read pieces like this in a place like HN. It remind us that, after all, we're people. We like techhnology, programming and, well, you know, the usual topics around here. But, in the end, like the article said, pe

I once watched that monologue. He argued that bullets should cost 5k$ to make killing unaffordable, IIRC. This raises another point, with regard to the original article: will printing bullets be easy with 3d printing technology? I may not b

I suspect that there would be a lot of edge cases where the algorithm wouldn't yield very satisfactory results. Think about images without broad similarly coloured areas, like white noise and such. Maybe further research will alleviate this

I honestly appreciate the efforts of Swedish people to promote equality, but they're a little misguided. Boys and girls just are different, and it's not only a matter of culture; in fact, I've always thought that cultural differences betwee

(Full disclosure: I'm a teetotaler) Everything you described also applies to Spain. Here, it's usual to have a beer while eating (wine is less common for young people); but, usually, "drinking to get drunk" is the norm in weekends and eveni

I know my evidence is just anecdotal, but I see it a lot. Man, do I miss my C++ and my Haskell when I have to use Python and javascript at work. Most people seem to disagree with that happening "a lot", so maybe I'm working with bad codebas

If this is done properly, it may change a little how the gaming PCs market works. If every "Steam Box" game is 100% compatible with PC's Steam (and so far we have no reason to think otherwise) we will start to see PCs labeled as "Steam Box

I've been using that "negative" rejection of automatic optimism since... ever, basically. In certain scopes, it works really well. Especially in business or college. Think that the worst is going to happen, get ready for it, and get a very
