learn to program - a bit of lisp, a bit of C [not to do it but to appreciate the mindset] Mentioning VB, Microsoft or Clearcase are very uncool and will turn away any talented people you might want to learn from, hang out with, hire or beco

Actually I hope Apple take an enlightened approach to this, and see it as a valid migration/coexistence/hybrid strategy, rather than get heavy. Its the ultimate complement to them.

What just happened? beautiful, beautiful piece of art and engineering. Id seen some of the RaphaelJS demos, so I knew this was coming.. but honestly was expecting this stuff to become a product in about 2 to 3 years time... and this guys in

Thats not a company you want to work for - they are looking for people who don't think.

Sure... they don't have to... but they often DO - which is why M$ focus marketing there. Just my personal opinion but I think schools, universities should be promoting open source, rather than backing commercial products.

All part of the lock in scheme - students have far more {interesting} opportunities to tinker with open source, imo.

A link to a PETITION where one can register support, might give this some political traction. I think pg+hn+/. etc could generate 50k signatures. ideas?

interesting point actually... Given the same textual semantic content 'information', a badly laid out and a well laid out site can be orders of magnitude easier/harder to read. One might draw from this that _layout_ has some semantic conte

thats kind of my point - its not trivially obvious that "absolute" is not absolute. I know ... RTFM.. but then theres what browsers actually do as a mixin. Hence good examples of motifs that are reasonably portable are all the more valuable

yes, and I was quite amazed at how well marketed it is. The girl who is responsible for such viral ninjitsu memes as "I heard it on twitter first that a plane landed in the hudson.. safely" makes Seth Godin look like an agorophobic dislexik

He seems to be saying "PHP shouldn't be supported because its a bit of an ugly language and somewhat insecure" But then should they only support Scheme? :] The problem is theres so much useful {badly written} PHP code out there, its going t

I think its quite a good site for css layout examples... I remember discovering how position:absolute was in fact _relative_ to the enclosing div/element, ayaaay! another css layout approach given here - http://www.digital-web.com/article

oh yeah... regex to match all urls == ugly hack. Why didnt they just define urls by a simple FSM / regex in an RFP ? Hey, I complain about the internet..but I do appreciate RFCs... Sweet lord, have a look at the UML / MOF spec - its hilario

.."Different OS for every program" yeah it is kludgy, inefficient ... but you are pretty much guaranteed that the setup works, which I think is a lot of the value.

Scheme implemented in Javascript for both server and UI might be a sweet spot. This - "37signals DHH ports Rails to Scheme" would have been my april 1st HN headline sweetspot !

Mind you... it might be much better use of time than jobhunting. but then you'd have to seriously compare with Open Source contribution - a faster way to learn, smarter people to work with and more social benefit... OSS work likely has even

I guess there is a real market niche that ycombinator flushed out- namely, Impedance matching between - a) investors with too much cash and too little time for small startups b) startups who don't need or want large amounts of cash

Highly addictive... Got to 1500 odd, had a sneak peak at level 30 then gracefully bowed out. Used a combination of heuristics - move a vertex to the centroid of its neighbors, and move randomly to reduce edge intersections. eyes burning.

Its always nice to read about how startups succeed, but maybe more can be learned from these postmortems. I was thinking you almost want a dedicated site for these... but could that be achieved by just having tags and filtering by tag on HN

Not a bad idea.. you could write in your lang of choice, presumably Ruby or Python, Scheme/lisp with a syntax / DSL you like.. then generate obfuscated/compressed PHP to run on the many cheap LAMP hosting platforms :]

Maybe part of that is the pain of dealing with configure / autoconf / autotools? Ive seen a lot of C/C++ programmers write their own build utilities/scripts and lose proper deps in the process. I found cmake a reasonable alternative.. scons
