You're overestimating an older generation and underestimating the impact of what you can do with unlimited money, and 400K people working on one problem.

I think people forget how much US national effort was dedicated to the space race. These guy's did incredibly well, even with modern advances for the money they are working with.

The point I was making is that a trip to disk is generally not occurring, and that having a soup of pointers in RAM isn't as bad having badly laid out memory on disk that needs to be paged in. Most performance being lost, isn't fr

That's not really true anymore. RAM is so big these days that most databases can fit into it and be blazingly fast. It's all the classic shit that slows people down. Loops in loops in loops in loop with nested if's. Not under

Also, when you're working solo, PR's are just a great way to look at a bunch of changes before you smoosh everything together because even with a full history it's sometimes tricky unpicking everything.

I don't think they are actually trying hard enough. As Homer Simpsons put it "We've wiped out entire species before, we can do it again" --- helicopters and truck mounted mini-guns and suppressed sniper rifles with $18k

I'm more worried about untracked CH4 leaks from coal mines and LNG projects. Which dwarf farm emissions. Cow's are just part of the problem. The real threat is the LNG industry.

It takes 10 years for that to happen. So the effect in the short term is 20 time more greenhouse gas effect. If we stopped producing CH4 now, it'd be 10 years to see the drop back to co2 levels.

What you're describing can be done to great success with the right type of requirements. Say you're building an information warehouse for OLAP style work. Totally makes sens to pyt all the heavy stuff in the DB because the data mo

I don't think we should pretend that google doesn't have the power to crush spam today if it wanted to. They have chosen to let scrappers have top spots in their search results and their reputation is dying as a result.
