When slack was acquired by salesforce everyone (that I remember) on HN and Twitter were congratulating each other rather than recognizing it (imo) as a failure to compete and a mediocre outcome. Pair that with their full page ad they took o

I don’t think this holds up to scrutiny when you actually look at how much people are eating. What does probably vary is the pleasure people get from eating which then directly relates to how much they do it.

You just don’t eat that much naturally (maybe you get less pleasure out of it). Fat people eat a lot and often don’t know how much.

I’ve never been on a calorie deficit and not been hungry. Calorie deficits are always a little unpleasant imo. It’s just suffering through that to get to a place where you want to maintain (which is much easier). I’ve lost 73lbs, 53lbs, 35l

I think he’s wrong - iirc intermittent fasting helps because it just makes it easier for people to maintain a true calorie deficit.

There’s some overlapping ideas with how groups on urbit operate. Though urbit goes further down the stack to replace the bits that make managing a Linux server hard (fixing the incentives that lead to everyone having to be on one centraliz

My take is that once salesforce acquires a product at best it’ll remain stagnant and unchanged. It’ll never get better, the smart people working on it quit and go elsewhere.

HN has always had its knee-jerk negativity and dumber biases on some topics, but the extremeness around the crypto stuff really is something novel imo. I find it not worth engaging on the topic here at all anymore (and I've tried earne

Yeah, I'm not arguing alignment is not possible - but that we don't know how to do it and it's really important that we figure it out before we figure out AGI (which seems unlikely). The ant example is just to try to illustra

Yeah - the existence of this post is really an example of it. "Is anyone else <obvious case of pandering to common HN tribal confirmation bias for a dominant position on HN>" -> lots of upvotes and in-group people agreein

The closer we get, the more alarming the alignment problem becomes. https://intelligence.org/2017/10/13/fire-alarm/ Even people like Eric Schmidt seem to downplay it (in a recent podcast with Sam Harris)

My understanding is the underlying argument is ultimately about fetal personhood and a national ban would be about protecting constitutional rights of the unborn (and having disputes about that rise to the level of SCOTUS for a ruling). Tha

Plus juice is kind of a crappy high sugar project that’s bad for you? Relatedly, I have no idea how “Joe and The Juice” stores remain in business. They’re in super valuable real estate in cities across the country and as far as I can tell n

Salesforce is where good software goes to die (or at best become stagnant and lame). Same thing happened to quip and will happen to slack.

Do you know why Fidelity Investments plaid connection doesn’t work most of the time? It’s something I hit often and have to do the old microdeposit thing (if I can even figure out how to trick the service into allowing me to do that at all)

One of the things that drew me to urbit is it feels like when I first started playing with linux. It's fun, but in a way that tackles some real underlying issues with the modern web/computing stack. The ideas are interesting and w

I’m not going to argue with someone that’s just looking to win rather than actually be curious about stuff. If you’re right you can look back smugly. If you’re wrong you’ll eventually figure it out (or not), won’t matter to me. I think you’
