Was a little shocked not to see any mention of Snobol4 in this article. Fantastic language, that really does not resemble any other languages and is a category of its own. The syntax is pretty dated but I still use it today.

If that's what your looking for, I find books that are adopted as university textbooks are best. i.e. C Programming Modern Approach by KN King, Object Pascal Handbook by Marco Cantu. Generally I'm staying away from O'Reilly,

You may want to look into Tinycore Linux. Lot of what you describe.

Well said. It took me years to understand this. You don't need to understand every last detail in a book to get to work. I'm a great C and C++ programmer, but when it comes to web based applications I would say I'm merely bet

Hugo user here. I just wanted to reinforce your message - I sometimes think about posting on Medium instead, for "hits"... When I crave attention; but as you said, those readers likely aren't my target audience anyhow. For t

Oh man, you sound like a long lost friend. As someone who struggles to adopt really anything post ~1995 in the programming world, I couldn't agree more. I've worked for Fortune 100s my whole career; mostly in big data problem-sp

It's good you're unapologetic. At the same time, these sort of features are what I love as they avoid me having to move onwards to something new, and start near ground zero. Living by the mantra "Do 2 things 1000 times, not

And let's not forget about the amazing commercial offering of Awk, known as Tawk (by Thompson Automation). To this day some features from Tawk cannot be found in Gawk.

I wanted to mention, not only is this article well written, it has every feature that has been lost on blogging today. Nice black and white theme, no pointless stock photos, quick jump menu at top of page, no modal popup pestering me, no pu

We live in a world where a fence builder or even a handyman wants $100/hr, and at least 2 or 3 hours minimum call out rate. That should put it into perspective that highly technically skilled labor such as computing science should be b

I don't think length matters.... I'm totally fine digesting a tweet or paragraph long message. What I dislike is long form that has to spend 4 intro paragraphs giving some irrelevant childhood or growing up message before they get

I feel the same way about Snobol4. It gave me the same wow factor that Prolog did.

I'm not sure how you drew a line from my discussion of c++98/11, to K&R C.

I think you hit it on head, that most new features are for library writers who need to capture every edge case succinctly. As someone who has used c++98 and only a little c++11, for nearly 15 years, and writes no libraries; I've had li

This is such a gem indeed! Websites like these, with small, bloat free utilities, are gone with the wind it seems. Can anyone recommend other similar websites?

Is there an army of hackers waiting around to exploit a 30 year old operating system? And not even Windows; but Solaris. Notwithstanding, quite sure anyone installing this is doing it to fiddle, not trade crypto.

Curious as well, but when I look at the glibc source for strncpy it is calling memcpy.... https://code.woboq.org/userspace/glibc/string/strncpy.c.html It all seems to depend on the compiler vendor.

Major pet peeve of mine too.... Blue leds on appliances are an instant deal breaker for me. Green looks cheap. Fortunately starting to see some white led displays on appliances, but hard to come across still.
